The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has designated Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, as a Ramsar site (Wetland of International Importance), taking India’s total Ramsar sites to 99 and the State’s tally to 12.

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory, marking a major administrative change. The move fulfils a long-pending demand of local residents and is expected to improve governance in one of India’s most strategically important border regions.

Five New Districts Announced

The five newly created districts are Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass. With this, Ladakh will now have a total of seven districts. Earlier, Leh and Kargil were the only two districts in the Union Territory. The decision was described as a historic step towards decentralised governance and better public service delivery.

Padma Awards - one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines / fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.

These Awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March / April every year.

For the year 2026, the President has approved conferment of 131 Padma Awards including 2 duo cases (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one) as per list below. The list comprises five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri Awards. 19 of the awardees are women and the list also includes six persons from the category of Foreigners / NRI / PIO / OCI and 16 Posthumous awardees.

अरावली पर्वतमाला केवल पहाड़ों की श्रृंखला नहीं है।
यह उत्तर भारत की जीवन-रेखा है — हमारे पानी, हवा, मिट्टी और जलवायु से गहराई से जुड़ी हुई।🔍 अरावली से जुड़े कुछ महत्वपूर्ण तथ्य1️⃣ अरावली दुनिया की सबसे प्राचीन पर्वतमालाओं में से एक है। ये हिमालय की तुलना में लगभग 1.7 से 2.4 अरब वर्ष अधिक प्राचीन है।
2️⃣ यह राजस्थान, हरियाणा और दिल्ली के क्षेत्र में मरुस्थलीकरण को रोकने वाली प्राकृतिक ढाल का काम करती है।
3️⃣ अरावली क्षेत्र भूजल-स्तर, वर्षा-चक्र और वायु-शुद्धता को बनाए रखने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाता है।
4️⃣ यहाँ की जैवविविधता उत्तर भारत में अनेक वन्य जीवों और वनस्पतियों का प्राकृतिक आवास है।
5️⃣ आज अरावली का बड़ा हिस्सा खनन, निर्माण और “विकास” के नाम पर तेज़ी से नष्ट किया जा रहा है। प्राकृतिक संसाधनों से जुड़े क़ानूनों को दरकिनार कर।
6️⃣ वर्तमान कानूनी परिभाषा के अनुसार, केवल वे पहाड़ियाँ जो 100 मीटर या उससे अधिक ऊँचाई तक उठती हैं, अरावली के रूप में मान्यता प्राप्त हैं। चूँकि अरावली की अधिकांश संरचनाएँ प्राचीन, क्षरित और अपेक्षाकृत नीची हैं, इसलिए लगभग 90% अरावली क्षेत्र कानूनी संरक्षण से बाहर होने के खतरे में है।ये तथ्य नए नहीं हैं — फिर भी सुविधा के कारण विनाश जारी है।
