How to Export Turmeric from India – A Roadmap by Harsh Dhawan
Turmeric is one of India’s most valuable spice exports, offering opportunities in whole fingers, turmeric powder, and value-added products. Here is a simple roadmap to start your turmeric export business.
Step 1 – Choose Your Product: Decide whether you will export dried turmeric fingers, powder, or processed turmeric products. Focus on quality, curcumin content, moisture, cleanliness, and buyer specifications.
Step 2 – Set Up Your Business: Establish your proprietorship, partnership, LLP, or company, open a current bank account, and obtain PAN and GST registration as applicable.
Step 3 – Get Export Registrations: Obtain an Importer Exporter Code (IEC) from DGFT. For spices, complete the applicable registration with the Spices Board, including CRES where required. APEDA notes that IEC is mandatory for imports/exports. (farmerconnect.apeda.gov.in)
Step 4 – Source & Test: Buy turmeric from reliable farmers, processors, or suppliers. Test samples for curcumin, moisture, pesticide residues, microbiological parameters, and other destination-specific requirements.
Step 5 – Find Buyers: Research markets, contact importers and distributors, use B2B platforms, trade fairs, and Indian trade promotion networks. APEDA’s AgriXchange provides market intelligence and buyer/exporter resources. (AgriExchange)
Step 6 – Quote & Ship: Calculate product, packaging, testing, documentation, inland transport, freight, insurance, and port costs. Finalize payment terms and Incoterms, prepare export documents, arrange required certificates, clear customs, and ship.
The key is simple: quality + compliance + reliable buyers + correct costing = a sustainable turmeric export business.
