Recently, a four-storey building in Mundka, Delhi went up in flames. Although on paper it was registered as a residential building, over a hundred workers (half of them women) were employed to assemble and pack electronic equipment without requisite paperwork like a factory license, fire clearance or no-objection certificate.
The incident claimed 27 lives, of which 21 were women workers. While the missing persons list remains long.
WSC, JMCโs statement brings to light the rampant negligence, corruption and apathy while also revealing the dire situation of women workers in such workplaces.

The Bill would be an amendment to the Cinematograph Act 1952, that "makes provision for the certification of cinematograph films for exhibition and for regulating exhibitions by means of cinematographs.โ
Women's Studies Centre (WSC), Jesus and Mary College stands in support of all those stakeholders who have raised valid objections to the amendments!
We demand
The restoration of the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal as demanded by noted film makers. We demand rejection of the proposed amendments to the Cinematography Act. We stand in unconditional support of the struggles of those in the film industry who have courageously raised their voice against this assault on democracy and freedom of expression!

Father Stan Swamyโs exceptional commitment to the most marginalised and vulnerable sections of people & their democratic struggles makes his life an exemplary one.
He identified himself with Adivasi people and their struggle for life, livelihood and dignity. Condolences to all his family members & friends.

The country is reeling under an unprecedented conjuncture of widespread socio-economic ruination, combined with a heightened health crisis involving not just the COVID-19 contagion but also numerous declared and undeclared epidemics that are gaining little attention given the singular focus on โCOVIDโ. The brute reality is that the ensuing COVID-19 pandemic has unfolded within the context of a long-standing healthcare crisis in India, which has only recently caught the attention of the media and privileged sections of society. The post-colonial state has visibly failed to build a comprehensive public healthcare system; to provide healthcare infrastructure and medical technology across the country for all strata of the population; as well as to educate an adequate number of skilled medical and nursing personnel.
Womenโs Studies Centre, Jesus and Mary College extends unconditional solidarity and support to all frontline health workers working relentlessly in order to manage the heightened health crisis, demands protection of health workersโ rights and immediately ramping up of the public healthcare system through higher per capita budgetary allocation.
