How to balance redox equations:-

(Abbreviations used:-
RHS = Right hand side of the equation
LHS = Left hand side of the equation
e = electron)

To do this task it needs to know the product obtained by a reagent in different mediums.

Ex:- MnO4(-) in acidic medium gives Mn(2+) while in the basic medium gives MnO2.

Acidic Medium :-

1. First balance the Oxygen in both side by adding H2O .
2. Balance the H by adding H+ to the relevant side.
3. Then add electrons to balance the charge

An example:-

MnO4(-) -------------------------> Mn(2+)

balancing O by adding H2O,

MnO4(-) -------------------------> Mn(2+) + 4H2O

then balancing H by adding H+,

MnO4(-) + 8H+ -------------------> Mn(2+) + 4H2O

then charge balance:-

LHS has +8 +(-1) = +7

RHS = +2

to balance add 5 e to LHS

MnO4(-) + 8H+ + 5e ---------------> Mn(2+) + 4H2O

Basic medium:-

1. balance the oxidation state by adding electrons
2. balance the negative charge by adding OH(-)
3. balance the H by adding water.

An example:-

MnO4(-) --------------------> MnO2
+7`````````````````````+4

balancing oxidation state

MnO4(-) + 3 e --------------------> MnO2

balancing negative charge

LHS = (-) + 3 e = 4 negative charge
RHS = no negative charge

Therefore, 4OH(-) to the RHS

MnO4(-) + 3 e --------------------> MnO2 + 4OH(-)

balancing H

MnO4(-) + 3 e + 2H2O -----------------> MnO2 + 4OH(-)
