The most common central nervous system parasitic infection Neurocysticercosis.

The commonest presentation of neurocysticercosis is ๐’๐ž๐ข๐ณ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ.

These is wide variety of presentation of Neurocysticercosis depending on the -
1. intensity of the infestation
2. the localization of cysticerci
3. the degree of inflammatory reaction.

Cysticercosis is infection with the ๐ฅ๐š๐ซ๐ฏ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ ๐ž (๐œ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐œ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐š๐ž) ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐“๐ข๐ง๐ž๐š ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฎ๐ฆ (๐›๐ž๐ž๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐š๐ฉ๐ž-๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ).

The lesion of neurocysticercosis is readily visualized by ๐Œ๐‘๐ˆ ๐จ๐ซ ๐‚๐“ ๐’๐œ๐š๐ง.

๐๐š๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ก๐ฒ๐ฆ๐š๐ฅ ๐›๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง ๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐œ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ are the most common findings on NCCT.

These cysts are located in order of frequency in:

a. CNS (Neurological manifestations are the most common)
b. Subcutaneous tissue
c. Striated muscle
d. Globe of the eye

๐๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง ๐๐š๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ก๐ฒ๐ฆ๐š is the most common site of neurocysticercosis. "๐“๐ก๐ž ๐ฏ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐š๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ฆ" is the second most common site of neurocysticercosis.

Most common sites of Neurocysticercosis:
Parenchymatous> interventricular > subarachnoid> spinal> orbital.

๐“๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ง๐ž๐ฎ๐ซ๐จ๐œ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ:

1. Albendazole and praziquantel are both effective in treatment.

2. Drug of Choice is Albendazole.

3. Anticonvulsants (antiepileptics) should be given during drug treatment and probably for an indefinite time afterwards.

4. Corticosteroids are used during the acute phase of cysticercotic encephalitis, if intracranial hypertension is present. (it is used for the prevention of development of hydrocephalus, and does not have much role once hydrocephalus is already present.)

5. Niclosamide is ineffective for neurocysticercosis

6. Surgery
