The Indian Society of Labour Economics (ISLE) is a broad based organization, which promotes comprehensive scientific studies of labour and related matters, provides a forum for free and frank exchange of views on various aspects of labour and related issues among all the people concerned, and disseminates information and knowledge for a wider debate. The Indian Society of Labour Economics (ISLE) was founded in 1957 by a distinguished group of academicians and public men engaged in promoting the study of labour and industrial relations, The group headed by Shri V.V. Giri consisted of Professors Gyan Chand, Baljit Singh, V.B. Punekar, Radha Kamal Mukherjee, C.N. Vakil, P.S. Lokanathan, G.P. Sinha and others. The Society, among others, owes its birth and growth largely to the nurturing care of Shri V.V. Giri, who later became the President of India. Among those who ably assisted Shri Giri in his endeavour was Professor V.B. Singh, who not only edited ISLE’s journal – The Indian Journal of Labour Economics – but remained the kingpin of the organization till he breathed his last in 1978.

Panel highlight | Gender-Intentional Pathways in AI and Digital Work | 66th Annual ISLE Conference
An official pre-event of the India AI Impact Summit 2026

Organised by Institute for What Works to Advance Gender Equality | LEAD at Krea University and the x Digital Hub (IFMR-LEAD)

This panel examined how women are participating in, and being shaped by, emerging digital and AI-linked value chains in India, drawing on ongoing work under the Sanmati 2.0 project. As platformisation and technological change transform labour markets, the discussion foregrounded questions of inclusion, access, skills, and job quality, and the need to embed gender intentionality in the future of work.

Chaired by Yash*ta Jhurani (Associate Director, Gender x Digital Hub, IFMR-LEAD), the panel brings together Anita Gurumurthy (IT for Change), Anweshaa Ghosh (Institute of Social Studies Trust (ISST)), Dr Mahima Taneja (Gender x Digital Hub, IFMR-LEAD), Ellina Samantroy (V. V. Giri National Labour Institute), and Dr Uma Rani (International Labour Organization). The deliberations highlighted how digital work is being defined and classified, the structural barriers women continue to face, and the policy, institutional, and technological pathways needed to ensure that AI and digital ecosystems contribute to more inclusive and equitable employment outcomes.

Community-Based Mobilisations: Contemporary Challenges in Organising Labour | ISLE 2026

At the 66th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Labour Economics organised by Symbiosis School of Economics, a panel organised by ActionAid India intends to examine how workers are organising in an economy marked by deep informality, fragmented production, and shifting labour institutions. With over 90 per cent of India’s workforce engaged in informal and precarious forms of work, the session hopes to explore how collective action is being reimagined beyond the boundaries of traditional trade unionism.

Plenary Session: S.D. Punekar Memorial Lecture | 66th Annual ISLE Conference

In a highly anticipated delivery of the S.D. Punekar Memorial Lecture, Prof. Jayati Ghosh (University of Massachusetts Amherst) dismantled traditional development narratives regarding wealth and progress. Chaired by our distinguished Prof. Ashwani Saith (Hon. Professor, IHD), this session, hosted by SSE, provided a critical examination of the widening fractures in the global economic order.

Prof. Ghosh presented compelling data arguing that the historic link between GDP growth and employment generation has effectively disappeared. With the top 0.001% of the population now holding three times more wealth than the entire bottom half of humanity, the session posited that the Kuznets Curve, the theory that inequality naturally corrects itself with development, is essentially defunct. The lecture highlighted how financial bubbles and AI are driving a "productivity obsession" that displaces labour and devalues care. Meanwhile, corporate monopolies capture profits without proportional productive investment. Ultimately, the discussion moved toward the necessity of a "Human Rights Economy", advocating for a shift from a GDP-centric model to one focused on redistribution, predistribution, and climate justice.

The session on Care and Climate Change, jointly organised by the WITS Southern Centre for Inequality Studies (SCIS), University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and the Institute for What Works to Advance Gender Equality (IWWAGE), examined the intersections between climate vulnerability, care work, and gendered labour markets.

The discussion highlighted how climate shocks and environmental transitions are reshaping unpaid and paid care responsibilities, with disproportionate impacts on women and marginalised communities, and underscored the need for climate and social policies that recognise, reduce, and redistribute care work as part of just and inclusive development pathways.

V. V. Giri Memorial Lecture | 66th Annual ISLE Conference 2026

The V. V. Giri Memorial Lecture at the 66th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Labour Economics, organised by Symbiosis School of Economics, SYMBIOSIS INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY, was delivered by Prof. Sachin Chaturvedi, Vice-Chancellor, Nalanda University. He delivered a plenary session that offered a critical rethinking of how development and well-being are measured.

Chaired by Dr Nagesh Kumar, Director, Institute for Studies in Industrial Development, the lecture examined the limitations of conventional indices such as the Human Development Index in capturing the fuller dimensions of human welfare.

Prof. Chaturvedi argued for moving beyond income- and education-centric metrics towards more comprehensive “wellbeing” frameworks that incorporate the quality of employment, mental health, social participation, and the skills required in a rapidly changing technological environment. Drawing on global evidence as well as classical Indian thought, he emphasised the need for context-sensitive approaches to development and a holistic understanding of sustainable growth that aligns economic progress with human dignity and capabilities.
