📏 LENGTH: 54 kilometres (33.5 miles)

The Bang Na Expressway, officially known as the Burapha Withi Expressway, is a massive elevated expressway in Bangkok, Thailand.

Unlike an ordinary bridge that simply crosses a river or valley, this extraordinary structure carries a major highway above the ground for approximately 54 kilometres. Guinness World Records lists it as the Longest Road Bridge.

🏗️ WHEN WAS IT BUILT?

The expressway was constructed during the 1990s and officially opened to traffic on 7 February 2000.

💰 CONSTRUCTION COST

The project cost approximately US$1 billion at the time.

🧱 HOW MUCH CONCRETE WAS USED?

Around 1.8 million cubic metres of concrete were used to create this enormous elevated structure. The project involved a huge precasting operation, with concrete sections manufactured and assembled to form the roadway.

🚗 WHY WAS IT BUILT?

Bangkok has experienced major traffic growth and urban development. The elevated expressway was designed to provide a high-capacity route above existing roads and built-up areas, helping vehicles travel through the metropolitan region.

🤯 THE SCALE IS INCREDIBLE

Imagine driving on a road that continues above the city for 54 kilometres.

That is roughly the distance of a long intercity journey—yet here it forms one enormous elevated road structure.

🏆 GUINNESS WORLD RECORD

The Bang Na Expressway is officially recorded by Guinness World Records as the world's longest road bridge at 54 km.

🇬🇧 THIS ROAD GOES UNDER A RIVER! 😲

📍 WHERE IS IT?
This is the A*5 Conwy Tunnel in North Wales, carrying traffic beneath the River Conwy.

🏗️ WHEN WAS IT BUILT?
Construction took about 5 years, and the tunnel opened on 25 October 1991.

💷 HOW MUCH DID IT COST?
The project cost around £102 million at the time.

🛣️ HOW WAS IT BUILT?
The central underwater section was made from six huge steel-reinforced concrete tubes. Each tube was constructed separately, floated into position, lowered into a prepared trench beneath the estuary, and then covered.

😲 THE CRAZY PART:
Each tube weighed around 30,000 tonnes, and about 90 divers worked in 24-hour shifts, making roughly 7,000 dives during the underwater construction.

The tunnel is about 1.09 km long and was the first immersed-tube road tunnel of its kind in the UK.
