Remembering Third Engineer Heramb Karmarkar, 30 🕊️
A son of Pune. A proud officer of the Merchant Navy.
On July 12, 2026, the Cyprus-flagged MV GFS Galaxy was struck by a projectile while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, off the coast of Oman. A major fire broke out in the engine room, where Heramb was on duty.
23 of 24 crew members were rescued, including 10 Indians.
Heramb, 30, did not make it home. His body was recovered and his family confirmed his passing on July 15, 2026.
Minutes before the attack, he sent his family his last message:
“Ship has safely crossed the Gulf.”
Heramb had been at sea for over 3 months and was due to sign off soon. He served with honor as Third Engineer and is survived by his wife, mother, and sister.
The family’s only request to the Government of India: Bring Heramb home with dignity.
Our seafarers risk their lives daily to keep global trade moving. Let’s ensure no seafarer is forgotten.

⚠️ Imagine leaving your family for months to keep the world supplied with food, fuel, and essential goods… and never making it back home.

That is the reality some seafarers and their families have faced.

Today, I express my deepest condolences to the families of the Indian sailors and all other seafarers who have lost their lives while working at sea.

Seafarers are not just crew members on a ship. They are fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, and friends. They are the people who keep global trade moving, often without recognition.

No seafarer should become a victim of conflict while simply doing their job.

If there are concerns regarding a ship or its cargo, the safety of innocent seafarers must remain a priority. Crews should be given the opportunity to evacuate when possible, and any allegations should be dealt with through international law and due process.

It is time for governments, international organizations, and the maritime industry to strengthen their commitment to the safety, welfare, and recognition of seafarers.

The world depends on seafarers. It’s time the world recognizes them too.

Our hearts are shattered, and our fury is absolute.
Three innocent Indian seafarers—Patnala Suresh (Chief Engineer), Aditya Sharma (Deck Cadet), and Shivanand Chaurasiya (Fitter)—have been killed in cold blood following a U.S. military missile strike on the commercial tanker *MT Settebello* in the Gulf of Oman.
These were not combatants. They were working men, sons, and fathers trying to earn a living on international waters. Yet, the U.S. Central Command saw fit to fire lethal Hellfire missiles into a civilian vessel’s engine room under the guise of enforcing a naval blockade. This is the third vessel manned by Indian crew members targeted by the U.S. military this week alone.
India has officially summoned U.S. diplomats to register a "strong protest," but a diplomatic wrap on the knuckles is not enough.
**Let’s ask the hard questions the world is ignoring:**
1️⃣ **Why lethal force?** As maritime unions have rightfully pointed out, the U.S. Navy has the absolute capability to detain, board, or redirect non-compliant vessels. Choosing to fire deadly explosives into an engine room packed with civilian workers is an unacceptable escalation.
2️⃣ **Collateral damage is not an excuse.** Forcing a blockade in the middle of a vital global shipping route means putting thousands of international mariners in the line of fire. Civilian life cannot be treated as cheap geopolitical collateral.
3️⃣ **Who is held accountable?** The U.S. claims these are "precision strikes." If a "precision strike" ruthlessly kills innocent merchant sailors, the system itself is broken and unlawful.
International maritime commerce cannot safely exist if global superpowers think they can blow up civilian infrastructure with absolute impunity. The targeting of commercial shipping must end immediately.
Our thoughts, prayers, and demands for justice are with the grieving families in India. Share this to demand real accountability. This cannot be swept under the rug.

Following an immediate response by the South Zealand & Lolland-Falster Police, the 54-year-old Russian Chief Officer—who was the designated Officer of the Watch (OOW) at the time—was taken into custody.

Chilling audio has emerged from the Indian-flagged crude oil tanker, Sanmar Herald, capturing the frantic moments it was fired upon by the Iranian Navy near the Strait of Hormuz. Despite reportedly receiving prior clearance to transit this crucial waterway, the vessel faced unexpected fire and had to plead to turn back.
