Can a volcano actually give us electricity?🤔
Yes, but not the way you might imagine. We can’t just plug into the volcano itself , that would melt everything. What we can use is the heat deep underground around it. That’s called geothermal energy.
Here’s how it works in simple terms. Engineers drill deep holes near volcanic areas where the ground is super hot. The underground water there turns into steam. That steam is brought up and used to spin turbines, which make electricity. Then the steam cools down, turns back into water, and goes back into the ground so the process keeps repeating.
Places like Iceland, Indonesia, the Philippines, Italy, and New Zealand are already doing this. Their power plants sit near volcanic zones and produce clean, nonstop energy every day.
In the future, new technology might even let us take heat directly from deep rocks without touching the magma. If that works at scale, volcano energy could compete with fossil fuels ~ but without the pollution.
So yes, volcanoes aren’t just fiery mountains. Deep down, they’re giant batteries of natural power.😯
