Needle Stick Injury (NSI): Prevention & Post-Exposure First Aid 💉

Needle Stick Injuries (NSI) may seem minor, but they carry serious health risks if ignored. Ms. Prachi (Infection Control Manager at DCDC Kidney Care) breaks down what to do and how to prevent NSI in daily medical practice.

🚨 What to do immediately after a Needle Stick Injury:

1️⃣ Don't Panic: Stay calm and immediately wash the affected area under running tap water with soap.

2️⃣ Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use bleach, alcohol, or squeeze the wound forcibly.

3️⃣ Report Immediately: Inform your supervisor/senior staff without delay.

4️⃣ Check Viral Status: Check both the patient’s and your own viral markers (Hep B, Hep C, HIV).

5️⃣ Seek Medical Help: Go to the ER, submit blood samples, get necessary prophylactic injections, and follow the Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) protocol.

🛡️ How to Prevent NSI:

Wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Segregate and discard needles immediately in a white puncture-proof container.

Always discard your own used sharps—never pass them by hand!
