In downtown Chicago, vacant office floors are being given a remarkable new purpose: growing fresh food.

A company called FarmZero is transforming underused office space into high-tech indoor farms where lettuce, leafy greens, herbs, microgreens and edible flowers are grown year-round in controlled environments. The first farm opened inside a former office space at 30 N. LaSalle Street, and expansion projects are already underway.

Instead of cubicles and desks, rows of crops grow indoors under carefully controlled lighting and conditions. Because the food is produced right in the heart of the city, it can reach local restaurants, businesses and other customers incredibly quickly.

The idea could also help tackle two problems at once: unused office space and the need for fresh, locally grown food.

Chicago’s empty offices are no longer just sitting vacant—some are becoming farms in the sky.

Erin Piacenti, a 32-year-old vice president at Bank of America, was fatally stabbed during a random and unprovoked attack in New York City’s Times Square on Monday afternoon.

Police said the attack happened near West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue, one of the busiest areas of Manhattan. A 68-year-old man was also stabbed and was reported to be in stable condition.

The alleged attacker, 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros, was confronted by police after the stabbings. Authorities said she refused to drop her knives and advanced toward officers before she was shot and killed. The investigation into the attack is ongoing.

Piacenti’s death has shocked colleagues, friends and the wider New York community.

American flamingos were once native to Florida, with historical records describing large flocks across the southern part of the state. But hunting and habitat loss pushed the birds out of Florida by the early 1900s.

Now, there are encouraging signs of a comeback. Wild flamingos have increasingly been spotted in Florida in recent years, and researchers believe some may be beginning to reestablish a presence in the state’s wetlands and coastal habitats. In July 2025, a flock of 125 flamingos was photographed in Florida Bay.

Scientists say the restoration of the Everglades and coastal ecosystems, along with the arrival of birds from the wider Caribbean population, may be helping create the conditions for their return.

After more than a century, one of Florida’s most iconic native birds may finally be coming home.
