Elnec Mangalagiri July 4-6 2024
Raipur AIIMS in 2017 was our first Elnec outside of DELHI and Rajasthan. Dr. Samarjit did everything possible to make it memorable. Six years later another mile stone training at Aiims Mangalagiri with huge support from the administration and the ever so relaxed and easy-going, but extremely efficient team of Dr. Samarjit. It was a rejuvenating Palliative Care learning of 2 1/2 days with 53 participants. This session was conducted by Sisters Sangeetha, Nileema and Hanife. We also visited their impressive Palliative Care department, which we hope will continue to grow and benefit many. Interacting with the nursing faculty was humbling.. We thank Dr. Samarjit and all the nurses and doctors in his team who make hard work seem so effortless and their Director Prof. Madhavananda Kar, who makes things happen wherever we are lucky enough to meet him. We also thank Dean Academics- Prof. Shreemanta Kr Dash and Medical Superintendent Dr. Nataraj for all the support. We will keep working with them all in Mangalagiri and be a tiny part of yet another center of excellence for Palliative Care and an effective, well planned Palliative care Curriculum at the nursing college.

She came, she saw, she learnt and she shared…. Sister Hanife – a petite lady with a big heart and so much to give.
Sister Hanife visited Hospis Malaysia this week, and shared her experiences as a palliative care nurse in India with our clinical team. And this is what she had to say about the work of our nurses as she spent time with them visiting patients in their homes: “They open their hearts to the patients and with that they are able to treat with compassion and with this they are then able to teach”.

The Supreme Court of India eases the process for Advance Medical Directives (Living Will) and withdrawal of life support treatment!
A Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice K M Joseph has passed orders to making suitable amendments to the previous procedure regarding making an advance medical directive and withholding and withdrawing of life support treatment. This landmark judgement is set to be a game changer in the practice of End of Life care in India.
Key amendments:
1. An advance medical directive may now be made in front of a Notary or a Gazetted Officer. There is no need for it to be countersigned by a magistrate.
2. For withdrawing life support, two committees need to be constituted by the hospital where the patient is admitted. There is no need for a District collector to be involved henceforth.
The judges of the Supreme Court of India also go on to share, "The said directive, we think, will dispel many a doubt at the relevant time of need during the course of treatment of the patient. That apart, it will strengthen the mind of the treating doctors as they will be in a position to ensure, after being satisfied, that they are acting in a lawful manner".
