A career plan can make complete sense on paper and still go nowhere.

That doesn’t always mean the student changed their mind or the family wasn’t serious. Sometimes the plan was built before an important practical constraint entered the conversation.

Cost. Location. Timing. Family responsibilities. The kinds of colleges a family is comfortable considering.

These factors don’t need to become an interrogation, but they do need enough space to surface.

That’s why a question such as:

“Is there anything that would make one of these options harder for your family than the others?”

can be useful.

It moves the conversation from “Does this option sound good?” to “Can this option realistically work?”

Good career guidance isn’t only about identifying strong possibilities. It is also about helping students and families build a plan they can actually act on.

Save this question for a session where the plan looks right, but something still feels unresolved.

AI may not remove a career. But it can change how someone enters it, learns it, and becomes valuable within it.

That gives career coaches another layer to explore with students.

When researching an AI-exposed field, ask:

- What work is becoming easier to automate?

- What work is becoming more important or more human-dependent?

- How are beginners likely to learn, contribute, and prove themselves as those tasks change?

Because career readiness is no longer only about choosing the right field. It is also about understanding how the route into that field may be evolving.

Happy Teachers’ Day to the people who spend their careers noticing potential before it is always visible to the student themselves.

That experience matters in career guidance too.

Teachers often see students across years, not just moments. They notice patterns in confidence, effort, curiosity, pressure, and change. They understand how academic decisions sit inside a larger school and family context. And they know that the question a student asks is not always the question they are really trying to answer.

Career coaching adds a different layer to that experience: specialised knowledge of pathways, assessment interpretation, education options, and structured decision-making.

For some teachers, that may remain an added capability within education. For others, it may become a new professional direction altogether.

Good career coaching often depends less on having a clever answer than on knowing when to slow the conversation down.

A student may arrive with a career name, a shortlist, or a reason that sounds settled. The useful work is often in examining what sits underneath it: what they think the work involves, what assumptions shaped the shortlist, what trade-offs they have noticed, and where their certainty comes from.

That is why the quality of a question matters.

A strong question does not steer the student toward the coach’s preferred answer. It creates enough space for the student to notice something they had not considered before.

Sometimes the most valuable moment in a session is not when the student answers quickly.

It is when they stop and think.

Every assessment report a coach opens carries the same task: work out what this particular student needs to hear, and how to open a conversation that gets them there.

That judgement is the practice. Which patterns matter, how they connect to what the student has already said, how to frame something for a parent who arrives with expectations of their own. It is the part no tool can do, and the part that deserves the most time.
