the discovery of a possible prehistoric rock art site by Prof Manoj Kumar Singh and his team from the department of anthropology.
A wrong turn during a field visit has led a team from Delhi University’s department of anthropology to claim the discovery of a possible prehistoric rock art site in Chaukhada village of Marihan tehsil in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur.
The find, termed “Chaukhada Rock Art”, was made after the team lost its way en route to a known site in the Kaimur region. If verified, the chance discovery could add a new site to UP’s prehistoric record.
Led by Prof Manoj Kumar Singh and researcher Sudeshna Biswas, the team documented a cluster of sandstone rock shelters located nearly 2.5km from the village. The shelters bear red pigment paintings depicting human-like figures, animals, hunting scenes and group activity. Based on stylistic features, the researchers suggest a possible Mesolithic origin (around 14,000–10,000 BP), though scientific dating is yet to be conducted.
The motifs include anthropomorphic figures wielding bows and arrows, triangular-bodied forms and clustered compositions that indicate collective behaviour, Biswas explained.

CONSTITUTION DAY
The Department of Anthropology and the Centre for Tribal Studies observed Constitution Day on 26 November 2025 with a thoughtful gathering held in the seminar hall. Faculty members, research scholars and students \ame together to reflect on the significance of the day and reaffirm their commitment to the values enshrined in the Constitution of India.
The observance began with a warm welcome, highlighting the importance of Constitution Day, also known as National Law Day. The significance of 26 November 1949, when the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution, was recalled, along with its coming into force on 26 January 1950. The gathering also paid tribute to Dr B. R. Ambedkar, whose vision of justice, equality and dignity continues to shape the ethical foundation of India’s democracy.
Prof PR Mondal led everyone in taking the pledge of the Preamble. The collective reading created a shared sense of purpose and reminded the audience that the Constitution is not merely a legal text but a living promise of rights, freedoms and responsibility.
This was followed by an insightful address by Prof R. P. Mitra, who spoke about the relationship between anthropology and constitutional values. He discussed how anthropologists, through their engagement with communities, cultural diversity and social justice, are uniquely placed to uphold and safeguard the rights and duties outlined in the Constitution. His remarks encouraged students to see their discipline not just as an academic pursuit but also as a civic responsibility.
Praveen Kumar, a research scholar, spoke on the importance of the Fundamental Duties. He emphasised how duties complement rights and serve as guiding principles for responsible citizenship. The reading was a reminder of the values that hold us together and the responsibilities we carry as citizens.
The observance concluded with the National Anthem, bringing the programme to a dignified close.
