Itihasa- The History Association of Delhi College of Arts and Commerce is delighted to announce the publication of the 5th edition of its annual magazine, ITIVRITANTA!

Itivritanta is the Annual Magazine of the Department of History from Delhi College of Arts and Commerce. The Magazine invites entries in the form of articles, photo- essays, poems, photographs, sketches, book & movie reviews, folk tales and social media pages review. The only requirement for entries is that they must be grounded in *historical themes*. The deadline to submit the entries is 27th December 2025.

Itihasa - The History Association, in collaboration with IQAC is honored to host Dr. Bharati Jagannathan for her lecture on ‘Reading the Sangam Poems’

Dr. Bharati Jagannathan is an Associate Professor of History at Miranda House, Delhi University. Her research interests lie in the history of religion in early India, with a particular focus on the Vaiṣṇava bhakti traditions of Tamil Nadu and feminist readings of the Rāmāyaṇa. Dr. Bharati’s works combines textual scholarship with public engagement. She conducts tree walks in Delhi, where she identifies trees and narrates myths and folktales associated with them, and she regularly leads informal writing workshops for students. Her major publications include the monograph Approaching the Divine: The Integration of Āḻvār Bhakti in Śrīvaiṣṇavism (2015). In addition to academic writing, she has authored ten children’s books, including the young adult novel A Week Along the Ganga, which was selected for the Tata Trust’s Parag Honour List in 2019.

Join us as we explore the Sangam Poems open a window into the social and cultural landscape of ancient Tamilakam. The lecture will provide fresh insights on the historical imaginations preserved in the early corpus of Tamil literature.

Salt Songs of Rajasthan

The “Salt Songs” of the Agariya community in Rajasthan emerged during British rule as a distinctive form of cultural resistance to colonial salt taxes. Performed largely by women moving from household to household, these songs articulated a vision of Swatantra Bharat and fostered collective identity. This presentation examines their role as a gendered, vernacular expression of protest, linking everyday life to the struggle for freedom.

Join us as Guncha Shandilya, a third-year History student, writer, and animal rights advocate, takes us on a compelling journey into the world of Rajasthan’s Salt Songs—the powerful, gendered voices of the Agariya community that resisted colonial exploitation.

In the 19th Edition of Hidden In Plain Sight Itihāsa - The History Association of DCAC in collaboration with IQAC brings you :

A Forgotten Precursor to 1857 : Rani Chennamma's Revolt.

In an age of colonial dominance, Rani Chennamma of Kittur (1778–1829) rose as one of India’s first freedom fighters. Decades before 1857, she defied the British East India Company, leading an armed rebellion to protect her state and her people. More than a queen, she became a symbol of courage, resilience, and resistance—her legacy inspiring millions even today.

Join us as Chandraket, a third-year History student passionate about India’s political and cultural past and inspired by his grandmother, a history teacher, takes us on an inspiring journey into the life of Rani Chennamma of Kittur, an icon of courage and resistance against British oppression.

Greetings everyone!
In the *Back to Campus* series of lectures by our alumni, we have Ms. Shreya Nithyanandan. She is an Alumnus of the Department of History at Delhi College of Arts and Commerce. She was formerly the president of Itihasa from 2023 to 2024. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Art History from Indian Institute of Heritage (formerly known as National Museum Institute).

Ms. Nithyanandan's lecture titled _Gothic Architecture in India: A Case of Cultural Adaptation at the University of Bombay_ will be shedding light on how Gothic Revival architecture in University of Mumbai (previously known as University of Bombay) during Colonial times was hybridised to suit local climate, materials and symbolic function. Her lecture will also explore colonial patronage, ornamental details and the statement these buildings made about power.

by Prof. (Retd.) Shashi Bhushan Upadhyay, IGNOU, conducted by Itihasa - The History Association on 12th September, 2025. The lecture offered a deeper understanding into the evolving approaches, debates, and methodologies shaping historical scholarship in contemporary India.

Itihasa - The History Association, in collaboration with IQAC, is honoured to host professor Shashi Bhushan Upadhyay for its inaugural guest lecture on ‘History Writing in Modern India’.

Professor Shashi Bhushan Upadhyay is a former Professor of History at IGNOU. His research interests are mainly in the fields of intellectual history, historiography, labour history, and nationalist movement. His publications include Historiography in the Modern World: Western and Indian Perspectives (2016), Existence, Identity and Mobilization: The Cotton Millworkers of Bombay, 1890-1919 (2004), two co-edited volumes, Dalit Assertion in Society, Literature and History (2010) and School Education, Pluralism and Marginality: Comparative Perspectives (2012) and about 25 articles on labour, Dalits, Premchand, and Gandhi. Besides, he has written about 35 Units for BA and MA students in the IGNOU. His latest book is titled as Gandhi and the Caste Question in Colonial India (2025).

Join us as we rediscover how history writing in modern India continues to influence knowledge, identity, and collective memory. This lecture will offer fresh insights into the debates that shaped Indian historiography, the challenges faced by historians, and the enduring relevance of history in understanding our present.

The Patriot is a war drama, set amidst the American Revolution, and explores the life of Benjamin Martin, a peaceful farmer who is forced to fight after his family is attacked. The tale is a symbol of resistance and freedom against the suppression of the colonial forces.
