I am happy to share the recording of my case based discussion on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), organised by assimilate by medvarsity.
In India, autism awareness has been steadily increasing, but there's still a significant need for more education and understanding. Educational initiatives can play a pivotal role in enhancing awareness by targeting various stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and the general public.
In my clinical practice, so many children come for consultation after they are advised by teachers. It will be worth thinking to incorporate modules on autism awareness and inclusion into teacher training programs that will not only help in early diagnosis and interventions but knowledge and skills will also support students with autism effectively. In addition to it, seminars for parents will provide valuable insights into understanding and accepting their children's unique needs.
Leveraging digital platforms and social media can help to amplify outreach by reaching parents and teachers to resource constrains areas.
By embracing more and more such educational initiatives, India can foster a more inclusive society where individuals with autism are valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Visual perceptual skills enable a child to make sense of and interpret what they are seeing and give meaning to it. Vision sends a large amount of information to our brain, which processes the information and allows us to form a perception that helps us take action. Visual perceptual involves elements like the ability to find hidden objects, fill in missing options, find discrimination with different objects, etc. Some strategies help your child with visual perception. Spotting the difference between two alike images helps in improving visual discrimination. Provide some construction toys to play with. Copying the image and patterns Puzzles, sorting objects of different sizes.

Strategies to avoid mouthing.
- Drinking through a straw
- Give crunchy snacks
-Bubble blow
- Providing hard candies
-Whistle
-Musical instruments
Mouthing or oral-seeking behaviour is developmentally appropriate for infants. It helps the Child to explore the world around leading to Sensorimotor development. This behaviour typically reduces by the age of
18- 20 months. But, if children continue this behaviour concern should be given as they are engaging themselves in the oral seeking behaviour. The child uses the oral seeking sensory inputs which involves the excessive
mouthing of the items to self-regulate and self-soothe. Children can put everything in their mouths when they are sensory-overloaded.
Here are some strategies to help with this
behaviour:
Giving crunchy snacks or textures such as celery, carrots, popcorn, etc.
Drinking water or thicker liquids through a straw will provide even more input.
Chewing hard candies or lollies but not
recommended for children under 3 years.
Musical instruments like a harmonica.
