Not every public health emergency begins in a hospital. Some begin with a single bite.

Snakebite remains one of the world's most neglected public health challenges, affecting thousands of people every year—particularly in rural and underserved communities where access to timely care can determine outcomes.

Behind every case is more than a medical emergency. There are questions about health systems, treatment pathways, access to care, surveillance, and the evidence needed to reduce preventable deaths and disabilities.

On World Snake Day, the conversation is not about fear. It is about understanding the burden through rigorous research and translating evidence into better prevention, stronger health systems, and informed action.

Because when evidence reaches practice, lives can change.

What happens when a new ni****ne product enters the market before regulations can catch up?

We are pleased to share the release of our factsheet, **"Unmasking Ni****ne Pouches in India: Product Availability and Industry Tactics,"** developed through a collaborative study by the Centre for Public Health Research (CPHR) and NICPR-ICMR, with support from Vital Strategies.

The factsheet sheds light on the growing availability, accessibility, and marketing strategies of ni****ne pouches in India—an emerging product increasingly gaining visibility among young people.

Released during the **National Consultation on Countering Ni****ne and To***co Addiction in India: From Evidence to Action**, the publication contributed to discussions involving representatives from NITI Aayog, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, NTCP, NTCC, CDSCO, Ministry of AYUSH, and state-level to***co control and drug regulatory authorities.

As the ni****ne landscape evolves, evidence must guide policy.

On 9th April 2026, Manbhum Ananda Ashram Nityananda Trust, Carbon Removal India Alliance (CRIA) and Energiva Ventures together convened stakeholders across policy, industry, research, and finance to launch the policy brief and technical report on ERW in India.

The discussion made few things clear:
ERW is a scientifically robust, high-potential carbon dioxide removal pathway aligned with India’s net-zero and development goals. Discussions emphasized the need for India-specific scientific evidence, robust monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) systems, and site-specific deployment strategies to ensure credibility and scalability. Stakeholders highlighted that policy support, phased financing, and strong institutional coordination are essential to move from pilots to large-scale implementation. The importance of farmer-centric approaches, market development, and leveraging ERW’s co-benefits for agriculture, soil health, and rural livelihoods was consistently underscored.

At a closed-door roundtable in New Delhi, policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders came together to confront a hard truth:
Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) holds immense potential—but the systems to scale it are still missing.

From policy gaps and MRV challenges to financing barriers and smallholder realities, the discussion went beyond optimism to ask what it will actually take to move forward.

Because climate solutions don’t fail due to lack of science.
They fail due to lack of systems.

Carbon removal isn’t future—it’s an immediate gap. ERW can scale in India, but policy, MRV & market gaps remain. A step toward fixing that.

Carbon removal is not on the policy horizon; it is an immediate gap.

Reducing emissions alone will not enable India to achieve net zero. The carbon already in the atmosphere must be permanently removed especially for India, where climate vulnerability intersects with development needs.

Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) is emerging as a viable carbon dioxide removal pathway, moving from theory to practice. India is well-positioned to scale ERW, with the potential to deliver direct benefits to smallholder farmers.

However, critical gaps remain. There is no recognition in national policy frameworks, no approved methodology under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (2024), no national MRV protocols, and limited regulatory clarity and coordination.

To address this, MANT, CRIA, and Energiva Ventures are convening the launch of a policy brief and a first of its kind technical report from India, alongside a roundtable with stakeholders from policy, science, industry, and finance.

The aim is to identify constraints, surface bottlenecks, and clarify the actions needed to advance ERW in India.
