🌐 Title: Passive Backscattering RF Tag Networks – Fundamentals and Applications
πŸ“ Venue: A-520, R&D
πŸ•“ Time: 11:00 AM IST

Abstract: We consider a new generation of Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology that uses β€˜passive’ backscattering RF tags operating in an extremely low-power regime. The most common use of such tags is in RFID technology, where a separate active radio transceiver (β€˜reader’) is used to communicate with the passive tags. However, this limits the scalability and broad applicability of such tags. Our work considers recent advances where such passive tags can communicate among themselves without any active radio device. In this talk, we will describe the fundamental technology of such tag-to-tag communication, including techniques to improve the range and robustness of the tag-to-tag links. We will also describe a novel RF-based sensing technique to estimate the tag-to-tag channel parameters and showcase how such sensing can enable wide-ranging applications including localization and monitoring.

Happy to share that Yash Kumar, PhD CSE Scholar, takes the stage to defend his thesis on 13th June at 1:30 PM IST.

His research, titled "Advancing Text Summarization with Conscience, Comprehension, and Multimodality," was conducted under the guidance of Prof. Vikram Goyal and Dr. Tanmoy Chakraborty

Abstract: Summarization, an essential technique for efficiently condensing extensive textual content into concise versions, has become increasingly valuable in the face of the information deluge characterizing the modern digital era. This thesis goes beyond the traditional scope by not only pushing the boundaries of summarization techniques, focusing on both unimodal and multimodal approaches for standard and extreme summarization tasks but also addressing the critical issue of biases within summarization systems. In addition to proposing innovative methods for bias identification, the thesis introduces mechanisms to control and mitigate biases, contributing to a more comprehensive and equitable approach in the domain of information condensation and knowledge extraction.

Title: Understanding and Explaining Affective Traits in English and Code- mixed Conversations

Abstract:
In the past decade, Natural Language Processing has undergone a transformative journey, marked by profound changes. The domain of conversational discourse, in particular, has witnessed remarkable advancements, with contemporary systems exhibiting significant potential. The pervasive integration of conversational agents into our daily lives often conceals the intricate computations involved in their functionality. Yet, non-empathetic responses or a failure to grasp nuances like humour or sarcasm remind us that we are interacting with machines. Addressing these limitations forms the core of our research, which revolves around refining a specific facet of conversational understanding – the nuanced focus on affects. Affects in conversation cover a myriad of discourse attributes, including emotions, sarcasm, humour, and speaker profiles, all playing a pivotal role in learning the comprehensive meaning of a spoken statement. Consequently, our efforts include identifying these intricate characteristics to enhance the interpretative capabilities of dialogue agents. Moreover, we posit that the mere identification of these affective cues might not be enough to capture the sense embedded within the uttered statement. To this end, our inquiry extends beyond identification to explain these affective dimensions, fostering a deeper understanding of conversational discourse. We address multiple novel problem statements, curate innovative datasets, and develop cutting-edge methods tailored to solve each task. Specifically, our focus encompasses the tasks of emotion recognition in conversation, emotion flip reasoning, humour identification, sarcasm detection, sarcasm explanation, and speaker profiling.
