Every year on February 28th, India celebrates National Science Day to honor the remarkable discovery of the Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman in 1928. This day is dedicated to recognizing the contributions of scientists and promoting scientific awareness across the nation.
Why Do We Celebrate National Science Day?
The Government of India declared February 28th as National Science Day in 1986 to commemorate the groundbreaking work of Sir C.V. Raman, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his discovery. The Raman Effect explains the scattering of light and its impact on molecular structures, a discovery that revolutionized the field of optics and spectroscopy.

This article explores the latest fuels being utilized in rockets, focusing on their composition, benefits, and the future of rocket propulsion.
1. Liquid Oxygen and Rocket Propellant (LOX/RP-1)
One of the most widely used rocket fuels is the combination of liquid oxygen (LOX) and RP-1, a highly refined form of kerosene. This combination powers many launch vehicles, including SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS).
Benefits:
- High Performance: LOX/RP-1 provides a high specific impulse, making it efficient for launching payloads into orbit.
- Stability: Both components are relatively stable, allowing for easier handling and storage compared to more volatile fuels.
2. Liquid Hydrogen and Liquid Oxygen (LH2/LOX)

Let’s dive into some of the latest advancements in space science that are making headlines around the world, explained in a simple and engaging way for budding scientists like you!
1. James Webb Space Telescope: Peeking into the Past
Imagine a time machine that can show you how the universe looked billions of years ago. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), launched in December 2021, is doing exactly that! It can look far into space and capture images of stars and galaxies formed shortly after the Big Bang. Recently, JWST discovered some of the earliest galaxies, showing how they grew and evolved over time.
Fun Fact: JWST can see infrared light, which is invisible to our eyes, allowing it to study objects hidden by dust in space!
2. The Mystery of Dark Energy and Dark Matter
Do you know most of the universe is made up of things we cannot see? Scientists call them dark matter and dark energy. Dark matter holds galaxies together, and dark energy makes the universe expand faster and faster.
