MDI Gurgaon is delighted to share one of the latest publications by Prof. Divya Aggarwal, CQF on the topic: "Thirty-five years of social comparison in applied decision-making contexts: An integrated systematic review proposing multidisciplinary research gaps."

🧾 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 - Acta Psychologica | ABDC – 𝗔 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝘆
✍ 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀 – Prof. Divya Aggarwal, CQF
📢 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿 – Elsevier; 📆 Month – March 2026
🔗 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0001691826003896

Abstract: This paper offers a systematic evaluation of over three decades of research on social comparison in decision-making, addressing fragmentation across theoretical perspectives and methodologies. Rooted in Festinger's (1954) social comparison theory, the study conducts a bibliometric and systematic review of 307 peer-reviewed papers from the Scopus database, mapping key contributions, publishing trends, and intellectual structure through thematic analysis. The review identifies understudied dimensions—including prospect theory, social cognition, and fear affiliation—and critiques over-reliance on lab experiments. It proposes a research agenda emphasizing methodological pluralism, context-specific inquiry, and multidimensional theory expansion to advance understanding of social comparison in decision-making.

Key Highlights from the Research:

👉 Social comparison is not just a bias — it is a core psychological mechanism influencing everyday decisions.
👉 The “keep up with the Joneses” effect continues to shape investment behaviour and consumer choices.
👉 With 86% of studies based on controlled experiments, the research highlights the urgent need for more real-world, context-driven investigations

Now over to you: In today’s hyperconnected world, do you think social comparison motivates better decisions — or silently drives unnecessary pressure and risk-taking?

Is marketing an art or a science? 💹

The PGDM (BM) cohort at MDI recently had the privilege of hosting Mr. Abhineet Kothari, Marketing Head (India & SE Asia) at Apollo Tyres Ltd., for a masterclass on "Marketing Decisions: Using Data and Insights."

Mr. Kothari broke down how leading brands transform raw data into a competitive edge. Here are the top three takeaways:

The Growth Pipeline: Data → Insight → Action → Growth. A true insight isn't just an interesting data point; it must be an actionable piece of market information.

Balancing the Scales: Successful marketers must master both Topline metrics (market share, pricing index, distribution depth) and Bottomline profitability (Gross Margin, EBITDA).

Ad Effectiveness: Moving consumers down the marketing funnel (from Awareness to Loyalty) requires strict post-launch evaluation, with Right Attribution being the ultimate key to campaign success.

Thank you, Mr. Abhineet Kothari, for sharing these invaluable real-world frameworks and inspiring our future business leaders, and a special thanks to Dr. Chinmaya Kulshrestha for facilitating this session!
