Earth Day is an annual event that is celebrated on April 22nd. The purpose of Earth Day is to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage people to take action to protect the planet.
Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, and it has since become a global event. The day is marked by various activities such as tree planting, beach cleanups, recycling drives, and educational programs.
The focus of Earth Day has evolved over the years to reflect the changing environmental concerns of society. In recent years, the emphasis has been on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving natural resources, and promoting sustainable living.
Earth Day serves as a reminder that we all have a responsibility to protect the environment and ensure that future generations have access to a healthy and sustainable planet.
Why is Earth Day celebrated?
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd every year to raise awareness about environmental issues and to promote environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, after a United States senator named Ga***rd Nelson witnessed the devastating effects of an oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.
Senator Nelson was inspired by the student-led anti-war movement and decided to create a similar movement for the environment. He organized a national teach-in on April 22, 1970, which brought together millions of Americans from all walks of life to raise awareness about environmental issues and advocate for greater protections for the planet.
Since then, Earth Day has grown into a global event that is celebrated in more than 190 countries. It is a day when people around the world come together to promote environmental awareness, advocate for policy changes that protect the planet, and engage in activities that help to reduce their environmental impact. Earth Day serves as a reminder that we all have a role to play in protecting the planet, and that we must work together to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
Why April 22 is celebrated as Earth Day
April 22 is celebrated as Earth Day because it marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. On that day, millions of people took to the streets to protest the negative impacts of industrial development on the environment and to demand greater action to protect the planet.
The first Earth Day was organized by U.S. Senator Ga***rd Nelson, who was inspired to create a national day to raise awareness about environmental issues after witnessing the devastating effects of an oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969. He enlisted the help of a bipartisan group of politicians, activists, and scientists to promote the idea, and it quickly gained traction.
The first Earth Day was a huge success, with rallies, protests, and educational events taking place across the United States and around the world. It helped to raise public awareness about the urgent need to protect the environment and led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and several key environmental laws, including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act.
Since then, Earth Day has become an annual event that is celebrated in more than 190 countries around the world. It is a day when people come together to raise awareness about environmental issues and to take action to protect the planet for future generations.

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian lawyer, politician, and leader of the Indian independence movement. He is often referred to as the "Father of the Nation" in India and is recognized worldwide for his philosophy of non-violent resistance, known as Satyagraha.
Gandhi was born in Porbandar, a coastal town in present-day Gujarat, India. After completing his education in England, he returned to India and started practicing law. However, he soon became involved in political activism and advocated for Indian self-rule.
Gandhi led several nonviolent movements and campaigns to achieve Indian independence from British colonial rule. These included the Salt March of 1930, which was a protest against the British salt tax, and the Quit India Movement of 1942, which demanded immediate independence from British rule.
Throughout his life, Gandhi emphasized the importance of living a simple and spiritual life, and he practiced his own principles of nonviolence, vegetarianism, and simplicity. His ideas and philosophy influenced many prominent figures, including Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and the Dalai Lama.
Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu nationalist, Nathuram Godse, who disagreed with his vision of a united India. Despite his death, Gandhi's legacy continues to inspire people all over the world to work towards peace, justice, and human rights through nonviolent means.
