One cannot fail to notice the inconsistency of those rejecting human rights: their rejection takes place in the public square created by human rights. It is difficult to reject human rights without using them.
- Filip Spagnoli
The United Nations Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body of the United Nations, through which States discuss human rights conditions in the UN Member States. The Council’s mandate is to promote “universal respect for the protection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all” and “address situations of violations of human rights, including gross and systematic violations, and make recommendations thereon”. The Disarmament and Security Committee is the first committee of the United Nations General Assembly and is filled with heated debates which revolve around security and peace-related issues. It deals with dynamic challenges which are related to International Security and seeks out new solutions to build a secure world. It also looks into issues that could potentially affect the international community and seeks out solutions to these challenges in the international security regime. The First resolution by DISEC was created in 1946 to address international concerns for the “Establishment of a Commission to Deal with the Problems Raised by the Discovery of Atomic Energy”. There are a number of issues that this committee encourages its members to discuss and propose resolutions on, including principles of multilateral cooperation for maintaining peace and security.
