Especially, ever since the introduction of ‘Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education’ doctrine, and with the implementation of Right To Education, Act - 2009, various changes have taken place in our schooling system for education of children between the ages of 6 and 14 years.
The CCE or ‘Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation’ was introduced for achieving overall personality evaluation of a child during her/his elementary education. The corporal punishment was banned, forbidden and shunned completely to provide fear-free environment in schools. There were other schemes involved, like free textbooks, free uniforms, continuation of hot-cooked midday meal.
Initially, people in schools, felt overburdened with these features. Now, they are getting used to these changes.
But some of them have managed to convince the successive governments that the old system of Annual Exam should be revived.
It is important to note that the old system was found to be faulty, fearful, and freedom-less. That is why, a lot of research was carried out at MHRD/NCERT/SCERT level, as a result of which the system of ‘CCE’ came to be. The CCE made a teacher responsible for ensuring daily, weekly, fort nightly, monthly, quarterly, half yearly, and annual progress of a student. There was a lot of noting work involved in this process. So, to lighten this load a modified version of CCE was introduced about two years ago. Teachers are now familiar and comfortable with this system. But, still, there is talk of revival of old annual exam and ‘pass or fail’ method of a child’s academic evaluation.
There is an embarrassing question before us.
Have the innovation and invention of CCE been proved wrong, irrelevant and useless by a handful few ?
Have the educational experts and researchers been proved wrong and disoriented ?
Your kind view on the situation is invited in light of the above.
