Remembering the Illustrious Journey of Mr. Bhim Rathke (1938-2023)
With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of Mr. Bhim Rathke, an exceptional alumnus of St. Joseph's Academy from the class of 1952. His recent departure on July 8, 2023, has marked the end of an era. Mr. Rathke, who joined our esteemed institution in 1946, embarked on a remarkable path that left an indelible mark on both the corporate world and our beloved school.
At the tender age of 19, Mr. Rathke began his professional journey with the Birla Group, swiftly ascending the ranks and achieving a milestone that eluded many: becoming the youngest head of a public limited Birla company at the remarkable age of 25. For an awe-inspiring 45 years, he dedicated his brilliance and acumen to the group, ultimately retiring as the esteemed head of eight prominent companies within the group. His tenure exemplified not only his unwavering commitment to excellence but also his steadfast dedication and expertise.
Beyond his remarkable professional achievements, Mr. Rathke found solace in the game of Bridge during his later years, while also generously offering his invaluable expertise as a consultant to various textile companies. Amidst his busy schedule, he remained an active member of the SJA Alumni Association Delhi Chapter. He seized every opportunity to reconnect with his fellow batch mates, relishing the chance to share cherished memories and anecdotes that bridged the gap between the past and the present.
In a poignant interview, Mr. Rathke eloquently expressed his initial awe upon entering the gates of our esteemed institution. He vividly recalled the disciplinary measures administered by Brother V.M. McEvoy, where latecomers were greeted with a pinch to the nose and side locks. With a touch of humor, he shared an amusing tale of how this unique form of punishment ceased when a boy inadvertently snorted on the Brother's hand, marking the end of an era.
Mr. Rathke's fondness for St. Joseph's Academy knew no bounds. In 1984, driven by an unyielding attachment, he embarked on a journey to Scotland to reunite with his class teacher, Ms. L.M. Goodwin. Memories of dedicated teachers such as Mr. G.C. Gupta and Brother Dooley remained etched in his mind, as they nurtured within him a profound love for Science, Mathematics, and Sports. As the head of the Camera Club, he assumed the role of the unofficial "official" photographer for numerous school events, capturing moments that would forever be treasured. He attributed much of his later successes in life to the solid foundation laid at SJA.
Recognizing the immense value of connections and camaraderie, Mr. Rathke actively joined the Alumni Association, finding solace in reuniting with fellow alumni. He commended the Association for its outstanding work and humbly suggested a focus on connecting with older batches, like his own. Alas, fate had different plans, and this cherished wish remained unfulfilled.
Mr. Bhim Rathke is survived by his beloved son, Akash, daughter, Arati, their respective spouses, and four adoring grandchildren. The SJA Alumni Association joins in prayers for the eternal peace and tranquility of Mr. Bhim Rathke's departed soul. May his extraordinary journey continue to inspire generations to come, and may his legacy forever remain intertwined with the spirit of St. Joseph's Academy.
