In Indian classical (Hindustani) music, a thaat is a parent scale consisting of seven notes used to classify ragas.
The modern Thaat system was created by Pt. Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande (1860-1936), one of the most influential musicologists of Hindustani Classical Music.

Characteristics of a THAAT:

• Seven Notes (Swaras): A That always uses exactly seven notes from the 12 possible notes in an octave (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni).

• Not Sung: Thaats themselves are not performed; the Ragas built upon them are sung or played.

• Parent Scale: A That serves as the parent scale or
"raw material" from which multiple Ragas are derived and categorized.

• Aroha (Ascending Scale): It is defined by its ascending sequence of notes (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa) and only uses the Aroha (ascent).

• No Emotional Quality (Ras): Unlike Ragas, Thaats are purely structural frameworks and don't evoke specific moods or emotions (like joy, sadness).

• Note Purity: A Thaat cannot contain both the flat (Komal) and natural (Shuddha) versions of the same note (e.g., it can have Komal Ni or Shuddha Ni, but not both).
