We regularly arrange birding trips to various birding hotspots across our high-biodiversity Doon Valley and the surrounding region, for both fun and for learning. Ya, we certainly think birding is F.U.N.! :-D

Our students participate in a 1-Year Basics of Ornithology Certificate Course ("BOCC"), conducted by our old friends at Winterline Nature Trust (www.facebook.com/winterline), who have fram

The GREY-WINGED BLACKBIRD (Turdus boulboul) is easily seen in the Mussoorie Hills, and the male and female (they look diff) are always close to one another as they forage for food (or for nesting material). This is the fave bird of H.H. DALAI LAMA , and indeed the Tibetan name for this species is "Jolmo" (the 'l' is silent).
This is the mascot of the JOLMO Tibetan Bird Club, the joint birding club of Tibetan Homes School (Rajpur. Dehradun) and Sambhota Tibetan School (Paonta Sahib, HP). So that's why this species was chosen as our mascot! :-D

At the moment in the monsoon, they have been busy raising their young, who were born a few months ago, and have already fledged and are making their way in the world. The species is in the mid-altitudes of the hills all year round; it is not migratory, but may move down to lower altitudes (e.g. Kolhukhet / Jharipani) in the depths of winter.

A little thought topped with some kindness are often worth more than a great deal of money. One kind act can bring a smile.
We BIFians, have undertaken a month long *BIFSummer* project which is to individually help people in need through an act of kindness.
When you are kind to others it not only changes you, but it’s a small step taken to change the big world to a better place.
Let’s all join hands to make this world a better place ❤

White-Throated Laughingthrushes, having their daily bath in the waterhole at Cosy Nook Estate in Landour, Mussoorie, in the Western Himalayas. This waterhole is within an oak-cedar forest at an altitude of 7,100 feet and is visited daily but hundreds of birds of dozens of different species, in all seasons.
As for White-Throated Laughingthrushes, there only a pair here, but they arrive in noisy groups of upto a dozen or more. The rest of the group was perched on boughs of the oak trees overlooking the waterhole.

INDIAN CORMORANT (Phalacrocorax fuscicollis), drying their wings after diving underwater to fish. The presence of cormorants indicates the health of marine life, hence the water quality will be fairly high. However, fishermen have always been annoyed by cormorants since they are competitors.
