A teacher does more than give answers. A teacher shows us the way.
गुरु बिन कौन बतावे बाट?
बड़ा विकट यमघाट।
भ्रांति की पहाड़ी, नदिया बीच में,
अहंकार की लाट।
काम-क्रोध दो पर्वत ठाढ़े,
लोभ चोर संघात।
मद-मत्सर का मेह बरसत,
माया पवन बहै दाट।
कहत कबीर, सुनो भाई साधो,
क्यों तरना यह घाट?

A simple English rendering:
Without a guru—a teacher and guide—who can show the way? The crossing through mortal life is difficult.
Confusion rises like mountains; rivers block the path, and waves of ego surge between them. Desire and anger stand like two great peaks, while greed attacks like a thief. Pride and envy pour down like rain, and the winds of illusion blow hard.
Kabir says: listen, fellow seekers—how will you cross this difficult passage without guidance?
