Jack Ma- His Story, Achievements, and Lessons for Today’s World

His birth name is Ma Yun, but his official name is Jack Ma. He is a Chinese technology and internet entrepreneur, philanthropist and business magnate. He is known especially for being the founder and CEO of Alibaba Group, which is a popular conglomerate of internet-based businesses. He was born on the 10th of September 1964, and he is the richest man in China as at today. And of course, he is among the richest in the Asian world. His net worth as at November 2017 is US$47.8 billion. Over the years, Jack Ma has become an icon in global entrepreneurship and business. He is also among the most influential men in the world today. He is equally seen as a leading innovative visionary having a wise business philosophy. The 2017 edition of Fortune listed him among “World’s 50 Greatest Leaders.” In fact, he occupied the second slot on that list.

Today, Jack Ma is seen as a source of inspiration to many who see him as a role model. Over the years, he has been known to advise, enlighten and lecture several groups of people.

You may not believe it, but Jack Ma is also an actor. His first movie was titled Gong Shou Dao; it was a kung fu short film and showcased his love for martial arts. Revelation also came that martial arts had been part of his personal and professional lives all along. He equally revitalized the ancient practice by being part of the forces that took it to the global stage. Famous martial arts stars, like Tony Jaa, Wu Jing, Jet Li, and Donnie Yen were all featured in this film. The movie was also filmed in collaboration with Single Days, Double 11 Shopping Carnival.

He started practicing the Chinese martial arts since 2009 and learned about the arts from a very popular martial arts teacher and master, Wang Xian. He equally employed the service of several martial arts teachers to teach at Alibaba. Some of those he employed then were Jet Li and Wang. He mandated all his employees to attend the martial arts training be offered by these teachers at his company. He took this measure because he wants to be remembered, not just for being the owner of one of China’s largest online shopping website and internet company, but also as a Tai Chi master.

Maybe you can believe that Jack Ma is an actor, but can you stomach the fact that he is also a singer?! Yes, he took part in the singing festival the same year he produced the martial arts movie. His dancing prowess is also on record; he displayed his dancing skills during the 18th-anniversary party of his company, Alibaba Groups. Yes, Jack Ma has a very strong entertainment value.

His personal life

As hinted earlier, he was born in 1964, September 10th to be precise, in Hangzhou Zhejiang Province in China. He took a liking to the English language at a rather young age, and he started practicing how to speak the language from then on by conversing daily with those who were native speakers in his locality, especially at the Hangzhou international hotel, which is about 70 minutes bike ride from his home. He would give the lodgers in the hotel a tour around the city free of charge just to learn the English language from them. At a later stage, he became a pen pal with one of his numerous English teachers, who gave him the name. “Jack” because the latter could not pronounce Jack Ma’s Chinese name.

Jack Ma went to college, though he had to struggle through his studies; he could not pass his Chinese entrance exam until after taking it four times. He went to the Hangzhou teacher’s Institute afterward and became a graduate of the institution in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts honor in the English Language. He headed the student council when he was in college. He later became a lecturer of International Trade and English at the Hangzhou Dianzi University. At a later date, he registered at Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB) from where he graduated in 2006.

He got married after graduating from Hangzhou Teacher’s Institute, which was later changed to Hangzhou normal University. He met his wife in the school, and they got married shortly after his graduation.

After graduation, Jack Ma wrote applications to companies for employment up to 30 times. However, he got rejected by all of them. He was among the 24 applicants that applied for a job at KFC when it first came to his city. 23 out of them were given employment except for Jack Ma. Harvard also rejected him all through the ten times he applied for the school.

His attention was first drawn to the internet in 1994. He went to the United States in 1995 where his friends gave him his first introductory tutelage to the internet. After the initial introduction, he took his time to search for information about China online, but he could find none. Then, he and his friend decided to create a website that gives information about China. Few moments after creating the website, some people from China contacted him, wanting to know more about him.

At that point, he realized the hidden potentials on the internet. Then he raised up to US$20,000 in 1995, along with his wife and a friend; they used the money to start their first company, which was dedicated to the creation of websites for companies. The name of the company was China Yellow pages. His company made up to 5,000,000 Yuan after just three years of establishing it; this was equivalent to US$800,000.

Jack Ma employed the help of his friends to start building websites for Chinese companies. He could not acquire his own computer until he was 33 years old. Furthermore, he was at the head of the China International Electronic Commerce Center from 1998 to 1999. He quitted his job in 1999 and went back to Hangzhou to find Alibaba along with his team. Alibaba is now a China-based business-to-business online marketplace. He started the company with 18 of his friends, and its first office was in his home. He had to spend up to 500,000 yuan to start this company.

Accomplishments

Jack Ma was selected among the “Top 10 Business Leaders of the Year” in 2014 by the China Central Television and its viewers.

He was also nominated as a “Young Global Leader” by World Economic Forum in September 2005. Furthermore, he was listed among the “25 Most Powerful Businesspersons in Asia” by Fortune Magazine. He was equally selected as a “Businessperson of the Year” by Businessweek in 2007. He was also chosen in 2008 by the same organization among the 30 “World’s Best CEO’s.”

His accomplishments are numerous, and it may take an entire book to record them. He became a Doctor of Science in Technopreneurship, an honorary degree from the De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines. In the same year, he was ranked as the third in global tech innovation visionary survey in the KMG survey.

What can we learn from Jack Ma?

The life of Jack Ma is a lesson for all, and there is a lot we can take away from it. Continue reading to find out the specific lessons that his life can teach us all.

Do not limit your view

Jack Ma never limits his views. He is known to go beyond limitations to source for solutions where none seems to exist. According to him, individuals that fail are being myopic to opportunities. Maybe he is right. Maybe we only need to learn how to look deeper and search further to reduce the chances of failure. Individuals need to start looking across the financial and professional landscape using a broad lens first before concluding impossibility. People should be ready to bend down and search every nook and cranny and lift every stone they can to find every hidden opportunity wherever it may be hidden.

See every opportunity as an open the door to greater things

The life of Jack Ma teaches that no opportunity should be seen as beneath you, menial or small. Whenever an opportunity shows up, do not see it as too small, but grab it with both hands and all your strength and also commit your heart to it. Make sure you put all your strength into it and do not treat anything that comes your way as small. If you keep to it, you can make something tangible out of it.

Seek to understand

Whenever you are in a new employment or career, you should try to understand as many things as possible about that employment. If you aspire to attain a particular position in your career, you should also try to learn as much as possible about that desired position. Find out why you want to attain that height and what you will be doing in that new assignment. Additionally, ask and find answers to what you have to do to get to that new height.

Act fast

Whenever an opportunity shows up, do not hesitate in taking advantage of it. The saying goes that “the race is not to the swift…” but there are times the race actually goes to the swift. Being swift does not necessarily mean running the fastest; it can mean bouncing back fast from failure. Summarily, do not hesitate when a new opportunity presents itself. If you hesitate, others may benefit from it before you, leaving you out in the cold.

Look beyond your prevailing circumstances

The training you feel you lack, your lost educational opportunities, where or how you grew up, or your current situation does not matter one bit; they cannot be strong enough to prevent your success in any of your chosen careers or endeavors. What matter are the hardiness, fortitude, and spirit that you put into that new endeavor?

Channel your ambitions properly

You should be single-minded in your ambition as a visionary. Never let go of your goal, work towards it and focus on it until you achieve it.

Put on courage

Potential backers for the Alibaba Groups gave him a cautionary feedback when he was about launching the company. However, he never let their discouraging stances get him down. He remained resolute and bold, and the result is there for all to see today. He could remain resolute because he had a clear idea of what he wanted and nothing could bring him down. The lesson here is that you must not give in, no matter the circumstances. Never give up and never allow any fear or negative vibe to cut you short.

Take chances while you are young

Jack Ma stated that anyone who is not rich by 35 must have wasted his youthful days. When you are young, you should capitalize all your strengths, the power of imagination and energies to achieve your goals. This means you must give your ambitions all the pursuits it deserves until you achieve your

Get your team members unified

Everyone on your team must have the same goal and focus. This way, you can achieve your desires and expectations faster. Do not work as a single person; rather, be ready to work as a team member. Expect at least 30% of your team members to disagree with your styles and ideas. Instead of shooing them off, it is better to work towards uniting them via a common mission, cause and idea. Even if some still disagree, look for a way to harness the talents, gifts, and potential of each member of the team to achieve the set goals.

Make yourself replaceable

You should work towards reducing the dependency of members of your team on you. This is one factor that will help unify all members of the team. Whenever you see an idea or skill in someone, you should cultivate and harness such ideas and values to the benefit of the team. Also, you should be ready to impact your ideas, values, and skills into someone that you trust so that another person can take over from you when you are not available, and the mission of the group will continue unabated to the benefit of all.

Conclusion

The descriptions from above show that we have a lot to learn from the life of Jack Ma. Yes, he got rejected by potential employers 30 straight times, but this never hindered or discouraged him. Today, he is among the top richest men in the world. Can you beat that?! It means whatever happens around you is not what can bring you down, but what happens within you!

Same as Entrepreneurs Trust

Photos 29/11/2016

You finish work at 6 pm, go to bed at 12 midnight.

Within these six hours, how do you spend them?

Watching TV?

In fact, the activities you do between 6 am and 12 midnight,

the importance of it is beyond your imagination.

Too many people believe that,

your career is determined by the 8 hours of hard work and effort you put at work,

and your future and career progression depend on the boss and the company.

But the reality is that for most people, this thing, you are on your own…..

Read on…

“Cultivation”, it’s forever dependent by yourself.

If you found yourself not progressing in life,

you cannot blame and put the responsibility on your company for not grooming you.

1. What you do every night is important

My major in college was marketing, but I expect to become a designer.

So I practiced day and night,

picking up some freelance work to improve my design skills.

It took me a long time.

When I became a boss, I no longer need to involve myself in design work,

So I went back to the Marketing field.

Every day, when my children are sleeping,

I began learning to gain more knowledge, this again took me a long time,

But I begin to realise my returns.

If I rely on my working hours to gain skills,

then I will never have become a creative director and a product manager,

or like today, teaching MBA students on Marketing.

What I rely on, is myself giving myself “lessons”.

And the most successful people I knew, walked the same path as I am.

I have a friend who is a History graduate,

but he is interested in technical sales,

In the day, he does telemarketing, at night he learns how to code,

Finally, he became the vice president of sales in a startup company.

Now, he’s a CTO.

I have another friend, he received a degree in political science.

But he’s very interested in entrepreneurship.

he learnt a lot of knowledge on how to start up a company,

eventually, he founded a company and sold it,

Now he has reaped the rewards.

For them, what they do between 6 pm till 12 midnight,

is what determined their future.

Clearly, we need to balance life and work.

If you have a wife and children, every night, you have to stay with them.

Even if you are single, you also need a reasonable allocation of time to go to the gym, to meet with friends, or be alone to meditate and so on.

Of course, watching movies, playing games is good.

But there are things you do not need to do.

For example, watching the new season of a Netflix drama,

14 hours per week watching television (This is the average amount of time watching television).

The time spent playing the game Candy Crush.

Or spending time stalking your high school alumni on Facebook,

it does not seem to be good.

So what should you do?

2. Read more, anything will do!

My college mentor was born in Alabama,

A poor African family.

He was admitted to West Point Military Academy, and he became the first person in the family to go college.

Before going to Havard for his MBA, he’s a trained officer.

When I met him, he has already developed his career in the city of Colorado Springs.

I asked him, what’s his biggest success?

He replied, because he kept the habit of reading,

and he never stopped.

He believed that if you want to get what you want in life,

knowledge is the key.

He often asked his interviewees what book are they reading now,

the excellent ones can give an answer immediately.

Reading can give you a good headstart,

this is often what your peers cannot obtain.

Compared to others,

you are more likely to know other industries strategies and tactics,

and that may be helpful to your company.

You can transfer your knowledge within the organization,

create new possibilities for your company.

Moreover, your conversation topics will become more interesting.

Anthony Robbins said:

“If you spend one hour a day to learn about a topic,

a year later, in this regard,

the knowledge you gain will be more than 99.999% of the world’s people.”

Even if you have 30 minutes every night,

each week you can easily read a book.

You may not be an expert, but I promise,

you’ll know more than what your peers know.

3. Do some projects

You can apply the knowledge learnt to real work scenario,

this is only an ideal state.

If your company did not give you this opportunity,

create opportunities for yourself.

You can do some volunteer projects. They can bring you fame.

Working with a team,

you’ll understand how things work.

In the practical application of the industry,

and how it ultimately affect actual customers.

You’ll learn how to perform the task and meet deadlines,

and get feedbacks on what you are doing,

and benefit from it.

When you are not strong enough, these experience may not have any value to you.

But you are still a novice.

these experiences are far more valuable than the miserable pay you are getting.

If you can really convince others of your pockets of fruits of labour,

Then go try it. But do not let these private jobs affect your work.

4. Actively build your connections

In your career path,

a strong network of connections will make everything accelerate.

If you have not set up your own personal connections,

you’ll need to divide a portion of your time to do this.

A strong network of relationships, can enable you:

contact smart friends, and learn their opinions
get information and knowledge that are difficult to obtain
help the company look for more potential partners
or income generating opportunities
Go get to know your work colleague or boss…..

If you are an entrepreneur,

your network connections will be your early customers,

your staffs are a source of capital

rather than go home, or going to a bar,

you should find some inner circles.

There are many small groups which are highly relevant to your career.

You should try to integrate into these circles.

Every week, you can drink coffee together with new friends,

go drinking or have breakfast.

You can also look into everyone’s career developments on LinkedIn.

And establish a network with mentors in those professional industries.

They may be your next job employer, who knows?

Your connections will be your most powerful asset in the workplace.

Since you have time to watch “The Voice of China”,

you have time to build a social network.

5. The CHANGE of your LIFE starts TONIGHT

6 pm to 12 am, you go home, though physically and mentally tired,

you are free to do anything and do not have to take orders from others.

During this time,

you can switch off like switching off your computer at your workplace, switch off your brain.

But you can also do something,

make you smarter, stronger, have a wider network of people.

From the start tonight, take an hour a day to do these things,

I guarantee that after a year,

your career, and life will change.

Lessons from this picture:

1. Not all opportunities are to be taken. Some are traps.

2. A person can become so determined to destroy another person that they become blind and end up destroying themselves.

3. You fight best in your natural element and environment. Here the bird has advatange in his natural element.

4. Know your limits, we all have them.

5. Sometimes the best response to provocation is not to fight.

6. Sometimes to accomplish something you need team work, you will not always win alone.

7. Stick to what you do best and don't pursue what will kill you.

A Heartfelt Letter To Employees From An Entrepreneur
--------------------------------------------------------
Dear Employee,

I am an entrepreneur, your so-called “Boss”. The one who has always been on your radar for all bad/good things happening around you. Probably the most favourite punching bag. But do I need to be cursed/abused for being what I Am? Hell NO.

My journey started pretty similar like yours. Struggling for an opportunity, financial crunches, pivoting, working on ideas, which I wanted to turn into reality without any ‘Alma Mater’. At that point what all I had was a ‘Vision’. A vision, which ensures that we all learn, grow and become successful ‘together’.

Striving hard amidst this entire competition thing around, I started looking for the right people who believed in my vision. Luckily, I found you clearing all hurdles in form of our selection criteria and I took a sigh of relief that I have got another shoulder.

I was very clear that what kind of colleague I’d love to be with but later when your first leave application got cancelled you termed me as “BOSSY”. Without thinking about what made me ‘reject’ it. It might be a matter of one leave for you but to me it’s like missing a helping shoulder which I have found after lot of struggle. No I am not saying that your reason is not worth enough or I will never sanction your requests but before being judgmental, think about the possible reasons please.

“He is boss. He can take a leave the day he wants”. Oh okay, so you think that I roam around aimlessly the entire day when I don’t come to office? You aren’t looking at the other side of the coin dear. I drive around whole day to attend meetings with clients just to ensure that we earn enough money so that I could pay you at the end of the month. Your worries are only about your salary, but for me it’s about “SALARIES”.

Time passed and you started disliking the office interiors and atmosphere. Could be a possible reason for you to move out and join a multinational. But mind it, your every small issue is a reason of worry and stress to me. Behind the curtains, I every day get down into financial calculations to ensure that I provide you the best environment to work in. But do you think “Google” built its swanky office in one day? Give it a thought.

With all small additions and efforts you have spent a year with me, and now it’s your turn to fire the grill. Time for an increment buddy! I am equally geared up for this and would love to see you grow in terms of salary. Though I need to be judgmental here and look into your performance as well. I believe that no increment can be enough and on the same side I also need to look into my accounts before I click the ‘transfer funds’ icon.

I need to be practical here. Imagine your helping aid at home asking for an increment. For them you are the ‘BOSS’. I go through the same dilemma. Flipping between my accounts and your expectations!

I know, you might not find the increment satisfactory and you’ll start gossiping around. Trust me, I am not offended by that at all. It’s a human psyche and I get it truly. But I am sure that you also understand you might be spoiling the environment that we both build together some time back. It is like burning our own house down just because you had a rift in the family.

‘Right to equality’ exists but not in terms of salary dear. Every one can’t get equal salary or increments. It isn’t that tough to understand. Is it?

Ok. So I am getting funded and your brain might start running faster than the internet’s bandwidth. I agree that receiving funds isn’t about me or my idea or you. It is about all three of us together. But understand the logic that no one puts their money on horses to spend it lavishly. It is about ‘utilising’ it in the best way possible and converting it into ‘growth’. So it isn’t about hiking our salaries or getting a new office ‘buddy’. With funds come great responsibilities and I assume we both will share it together like old days.

Why am I writing all this? Well, at times I feel like sharing these thoughts of mine with you but suddenly I have to face an imaginative creature of yours called ‘The Boss’. No, I don’t want to be a boss. Seriously no. You may call me by any name you want, but don’t treat me like a ‘dictator’. The only difference what I feel between ‘You’ & ‘I’ is of the ‘RISK’.

No, I am not saying you haven’t taken the risk by deciding to work with me. But trust me, mine is bigger than yours. Because it’s not just mine, its mine + yours + others working with us. Of course, I will get rewarded for that too, but it would always be dedicated to ‘US’. Not me or you.

So you must be thinking what point I wanted to make here? The answer is simple. ‘Understand’ your colleague, boss, that jerk, whatever you call me. There is a lot in my plate which I simply can’t waste and the only thing I need to do is to ‘manage’ it in the best way possible?

The only thing I’d love to ask you?
“ARE YOU WITH ME?”

Yours
Boss

Startups that have just entered the game or those planning on doing so start their businesses by registering as private limited companies. Almost 93 percent of the companies incorporated in India are registered as private limited companies.
The government has introduced a new concept called the One Person Company (OPC) for individuals who do not want to share ownership in the business. An OPC is also a private limited company. We will discuss both private limited companies and OPCs.

Entrepreneurs must know the following things before registering a company as a private limited company.

1- No minimum capital required to register a company

Earlier, the shareholders had to pay a minimum of Rs 1 lakh as a subscription amount to incorporate a private limited company. Looking at this amount, many startups chose to switch to sole proprietorship. Now, the government has dispensed with the minimum capital criteria, that is, now a company can be incorporated with ZERO capital.
But yes, the company will need capital to run a business. Therefore, it can increase its capital in future according to the requirement of the business.

2- Minimum two individual directors are required
Minimum two directors are required to incorporate a private limited company. Companies Act, 2013, has introduced the concept of One Person Company (OPC) private limited, in which a single individual can start a private limited company. Thus, if you plan to incorporate OPC, you can incorporate it with only one director.

3-Minimum two shareholders are required

Shareholders are owners of the company and they have certain rights, including appointment and removal of directors. A private limited company can be incorporated with a minimum of two shareholders. Again, with the introduction of OPC private limited, now a company can be incorporated with a single individual as the shareholder.
The shareholders could be natural persons or companies, including foreign companies. But in case of OPC private limited, only natural person can be the shareholder of the company.

4- The same person can be both a director and a shareholder

An individual can hold the position of both a director as well as a shareholder in a private limited company, but a body corporate shareholder cannot hold the position of a director.

5- Maximum number of shareholders or members in a private company can be 200
To incorporate a private limited company, a minimum of two shareholders are required and a maximum of 200 shareholders are allowed.
In case of OPC private limited, as the name says, there can’t be more than one shareholder.

6- One director must be a resident in India
At least one director of a private limited company must be a resident in India.
Resident in India means any person who has stayed in India for a total period of not less than 182 days in the previous financial year.

7- Shares of private limited company cannot be traded on stock exchange
If you are planning to list your company’s shares on stock exchange you must go for public limited companies, since shares of private limited company cannot be listed and traded on stock exchange.

8- Restrictions on transfer of shares to outsiders

In case of private company there is restriction on transfer of shares to outsiders. If shareholders of a private company want to transfer their shares, they need to give a written notice to the company about his intention to transfer. The company would in turn notify other members of the company, stating that certain shares are available, which can be purchased by the members. However, if none of the members agrees to purchase the shares, the shares can be transferred to an outsider, to which the company cannot refuse.
