A supernova shower is a hypothetical astronomical event where a group of stars within a certain region of space experience supernova explosions in a relatively short period of time, leading to an intense burst of radiation and energy. This phenomenon could have a profound impact on the surrounding environment, such as triggering the formation of new stars or disrupting the orbits of nearby planets.

Scientists at Skoltech Bio have tested AlphaFold, the artificial intelligence program that solved the central problem of structural bioinformatics by predicting protein structures, on another challenge in the field. The team asked AlphaFold to predict the impact of single mutations on protein stability, and the results contradicted experimental findings, suggesting that the AI is not a cure-all for structural bioinformatics. The authors also refuted claims by some AlphaFold enthusiasts that the program had mastered the ultimate protein physics and should work beyond the task it was designed for. The findings were reported in a PLOS One study.

Researchers found that pigeons are capable of categorizing objects in a similar way to AI, indicating that the birds may use abstract reasoning when processing visual information. The study suggests that AI could benefit from studying how biological brains process information, particularly when it comes to object recognition. By uncovering these similarities, scientists hope to develop more efficient algorithms for machine learning and computer vision.

Researchers at Tel Aviv University have discovered that stressed tomato and to***co plants emit sounds similar to bubble-wrap being popped. These ultrasonic noises, which are inaudible to humans, may be detectable by insects, other mammals, and possibly other plants. The sounds could be a form of communication, carrying information about plant stress levels. Using microphones, the team recorded the sounds of healthy and stressed plants and trained a machine-learning algorithm to differentiate between the types of stress and plant species. The findings open new possibilities for understanding plant communication and have potential applications in agriculture for monitoring crop hydration and optimizing irrigation systems.
