Students from Classes VI, VII, VIII and XI visited the Jabarkhet Nature Reserve on 3 May 2026 as part of the Nature and Hiking Club. Planned as a guided nature walk, the visit offered students an opportunity to engage closely with the outdoors.

Despite steady rain limiting wildlife sightings, the experience took on a different character. The mist-covered trails, dense forest cover and sound of rainfall created a quiet, immersive setting, allowing students to observe the landscape in a more reflective way.

The hike encouraged students to adapt to changing conditions, remain engaged, and appreciate nature beyond ideal circumstances, making the experience both grounding and memorable.

Research begins with a question. On the 9th of May, students from Classes 10, 11 and 12 spent an afternoon learning how to ask better ones.

The Department of Social Science, in collaboration with the Computer Science Department, hosted a session titled "The Art of Writing an Effective Research Paper", led by Dr. Muskan Dhandhi, Assistant Professor of English at the School of Liberal Studies and Media, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun.

The session walked students through the foundations of academic research, from framing a research question and developing a hypothesis to understanding methodology and navigating the various stages of the research process. What made it particularly effective was the approach: real-life examples that kept the room engaged and gave students the tools to work through each step independently. The session also covered avenues for publishing research and the processes involved, giving students a clearer picture of where good research can go.

For students who will soon be expected to produce independent academic work, it was a timely and practical afternoon.

Miss Grace Mary Linnell, the founding Principal of Welham Girls’ School, played a defining role in shaping the institution after its establishment in 1957. Entrusted with the responsibility of building and leading the school by Miss H. S. Oliphant, Ms. Linnell laid the foundations of an institution that combined academic excellence with a strong grounding in Indian culture and values. Her vision, discipline and unwavering commitment continue to remain central to the ethos of the school more than five decades later.

On 8 May 2026, the school community gathered at the prayer platform to observe the 56th death anniversary of Miss Linnell and pay tribute to her enduring legacy. Former Principal Ms. Jyotsana Brar, along with former staff members, joined students, faculty and staff for the memorial service.

In her address, the Principal, Ms. Vibha Kapoor reflected on Miss Linnell’s extraordinary contribution to education and her conviction in creating an institution rooted in integrity, discipline and independent thought. Passages from 'A Teacher’s Tale' highlighted the remarkable determination with which she built the school, while also recalling her belief in taking pride in Indian identity — reflected in her decision to adopt the salwar kameez as the school uniform at a time when most institutions followed Western models.

The service also included prayers and hymns by the students, creating a solemn and reflective atmosphere as the school remembered a leader whose values and vision continue to guide generations of Welhamites.

The achievement stands as a proud testament to the collective efforts, innovation, and dedication of the entire Welham community.

Tender Roots Academy of Performing Arts brought 'Jazz for Kids' to Welham Girls' School, featuring artists from the Netherlands, Australia and South Africa for an hour of live jazz that was anything but a quiet sit-down affair. The evening was opened to some students and staff from neighbouring schools as well, filling the auditorium with an audience that came from across the city and left with considerably more than they expected.

Saxophone, drums, piano, trumpet and much more set the tone from the first note, and the artists wasted little time drawing the audience in. What began as a performance gradually became something more participatory, with the crowd finding itself part of the show rather than just watching it. The energy in the room built steadily through the evening, and it became impossible not to swing in your seats or tap your feet.

By the time the final song was over, the audience had made its feelings clear. The chants for "one more song" grew louder until the artists, to their credit, happily obliged. They closed with Louis Armstrong's 'What a Wonderful World', and it was difficult to argue with the choice.

Jazz, it turns out, needs very little introduction. A good band and a willing audience are all it takes.

World Table Tennis Day and Earth Day fall just a day apart. This year, Welham Girls' School celebrated both together.

On the 18th of April, the school hosted an inter-school table tennis tournament in collaboration with a social enterprise working towards sustainable sports infrastructure and eco-friendly innovation. Eighteen players from seven schools took part in the league-cum-knockout format. The matches were played before the school community and guests, with close rallies and comeback victories keeping the audience engaged throughout.

At Welham, the sport has a serious following, and events like these reflect that commitment.

The tournament also served as a real-world testing ground for something less expected. The social enterprise unveiled an eco-friendly prototype, a table tennis table made entirely of bamboo, paired with a net hand-woven from recycled yarn. Students played on the equipment and shared feedback on usability and durability, becoming active contributors to a design process aimed at making sustainable sports infrastructure viable for schools and community centres across the country.

Sport and sustainability, it turns out, make for a natural partnership.

Of the 139 students who received the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award in India this year, 46 were from Welham Girls' School.

On the 21st of April, the awardees attended the International Award for Young People (IAYP) Gold Award Ceremony, where outstanding young achievers from across the country were recognised for completing one of the most demanding youth development programmes in the world. The Gold Award asks its participants for sustained commitment over years, across physical activity, skill development, voluntary service and an adventurous journey. Earning it is no small feat.

Welham Girls' School was also named one of the best performing units of 2025, a reflection of how deeply the programme has taken root here over time.

The ceremony had its own special moments from Welhamites. Gauri Rawat performed a captivating Bharatanatyam performance on the occasion, and Aatrree Maheshwari passionately spoke about what the Gold Award journey had meant to her. Several students were present to receive their awards, while others, currently studying abroad, were represented by their proud parents.

46 Gold Awards, one school, and a programme that continues to bring out the best in the students who commit to it.

Science, when it is working, doesn't feel like a lesson.

On the 14th of April, Class 6 students spent two hours finding that out. They explored Oobleck, a non-Newtonian fluid that behaves like a solid under pressure and flows like a liquid the moment that pressure is released. It is the sort of thing that is easier to understand with your hands than with a textbook.

The session then moved to rocket-building, where students designed and launched their own mini rockets in a competition that had considerably more enthusiasm than precision. The final activity brought in Class 11 EVS students, who guided their younger peers in constructing solar cookers. Each team successfully used their model to melt chocolate, a simple demonstration that left little doubt about the practical value of solar energy.

In two hours, the students covered states of matter, basic rocketry and renewable energy, though it is unlikely any of them were thinking about it in those terms at the time.

That, more or less, was the point.

Right between Project Hail Mary hitting theatres and Artemis preparing for launch, our Class 9 students set off from Dehradun and landed in Chennai, ready to fuel their scientific curiosity on their mid-term trip.

Their journey led them to the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), one of India’s premier nuclear research facilities and the second-largest establishment under the Department of Atomic Energy. Here, students were introduced to advanced scientific work, including the Fast Breeder Test Reactor and the research behind India’s Fast Breeder Reactor technology.

They also had the opportunity to attend an address by the Director, Shri Sreekumar G. Pillai, offering a glimpse into the work being carried out at the forefront of nuclear science and engineering.
A lively science quiz further engaged their curiosity and understanding, turning learning into a friendly challenge.

The group also visited Mahabalipuram, where they explored sites of historical importance and remarkable rock-cut architecture, gaining insight into another layer of India’s cultural heritage.
