I know of a police officer that excelled in the job physically, but academically learned at a slower pace, they needed some extended training as a rookie, but with investment from the leadership and their field training officers, in the end, excelled and eventually became a leader that made unprecedented positive changes for the police department. No one saw that coming.
We don’t all start out at the top of our game, and some pick up faster than others. Have patience, invest in your members/staff, assign another member to assist them if needed.
Yes, some will leave as they realize that inevitably, the job is not for them, but for those who want to stay, who make the effort, who put their heart into the work, give them the extra push to get to the finish line, just don’t leave anyone behind that wants it.
This is a small part of building long term success for your organization, as you never know who may be the organizations’ best asset in the future.
