The Indian Army will soon be operating six AASHVAST labs across the country, where all its drones and CCTV cameras too will undergo mandatory inspections to identify and eliminate firmware level vulnerabilities.

AASHVAST stands for Assessment and Analysis of Electronic Systems Hardware for Vulnerabilities and Security Threats.

Firmware is a specialized type of software permanently or semi-permanently embedded into a hardware device to provide low-level control and basic operational instructions.

It also examines the software that operates these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) – to identify and eliminate firmware-level vulnerabilities.

The idea behind establishing these labs, a first of its kind, was to neutralise the common threats of enemy interference in Indian drones, preventing them from performing their designated tasks in a contested area

So far, drones procured by the Indian Army did not have firmware-level vulnerabilities checked.

The National Payments Corporation of India has introduced a charge of 0.4% that most merchants will have to pay banks and payment processors on UPI payments they receive, in excess of ₹2,000 per transaction, it said on Tuesday.
The charge, or Merchant Discount Rate (MDR), will not be applicable to person-to-person UPI transactions and UPI transactions to small vendors. All person-to-merchant transactions of up to ₹2,000 done on UPI or through RuPay debit cards will also be exempt.

In some sectors, such as Railways, telecom, insurance, fuel and agriculture inputs, transactions over ₹2,000 will incur a flat MDR of ₹5. The new structure will take effect from October 15.
