Kirat bhumme puja III
On behalf of Kirat Khambu Language and Culture Study Centre we would like to express our heartfelt condolence to Dr Pratap Singh Rai (coordinator of our study centre) and his entire family on the demise of his father Late Lt col Ram Singh Rai (founder BSMI Institution)
Khambu have their number of their own tutelary shaman priests known as Mangpas or Bijuwas, Nakchhong, Mabimi, Kubimi and Dawang who have their own set of rituals and resposibilities to follow.
MangPa is the main priest who Conducts Samkhalung rituals –household diety, performs Thomwa/chinta etc
Nakchong-one who conducts Sakewa (worship of nature) (Dongwangna –God of cultivation of crops , Donglasha- God of Harvesting crops)
Mabimi who conducts the last rite of the deceased.Mabimi allows the sould of natural death to live in Samkhalung
Today let us know about the five death rituals that the Khambus follow-
Khambu-Rais recognize five different types of death and the souls of the dead are accompanied in their soul journey by the Mabinis, and their souls are persuaded to stay at different places.
**At the death of the Raipas and Raimas their incarnate shaman priest known as Mabimi accompanies the soul of the deceased and the soul is then persuaded to live in the Samkhalung as a venerated ancestor
**The deceased souls of the unmarried man and woman are accompanied in their soul journey by Mabimi and persuaded to live in Rongeli (i.e. Akashic field or atmosphere of outside the main door of the house)
**The young or immature married or adopted person’s departed soul is accompanied in their soul journey by Mabimi and persuaded to stay in Namelung (i.e. ever sunny stone on the lap of the highest mountain).
**). The soul of the person who dies an unnatural death (such as an accidental or suicidal death), is accompanied in their soul journey by Mabimi and persuaded to live in Hillaten (i.e. blood shaded rocky place).
**Further, a woman who dies during delivery, has her soul accompanied in her soul journey an persuaded to dwell in Manmangten (ie. Gloomy and steep rock).
