Today, Dr. Abhishek Shukla discussed with the B.Sc. Nursing first-year students the important steps to take if someone suddenly becomes paralyzed. Paralysis can occur either due to a stroke or a brain hemorrhage. In such situations, it is crucial to ask if the person is a known blood pressure patient and whether they have missed their medication, as uncontrolled hypertension is a major cause of both conditions. Understanding the cause is important for timely intervention and prevention of further damage.

He explained that the side of the brain affected determines which part of the body will be paralyzed. If bleeding occurs on the left side of the brain, then the right side of the body will not function properly, and vice versa if the bleeding is on the right side. To confirm the exact cause, sending the patient for a CT scan is necessary. From the scan, one can make out whether the paralysis is due to a clot or a hemorrhage, which further guides the line of treatment.

Dr. Shukla also addressed other emergency situations. If someone comes complaining that they are unable to breathe, immediate assessment and support of the airway, breathing, and circulation is vital, ensuring oxygen supply and emergency medical care without delay. In cases where a person is experiencing a panic attack, the right approach is to calm them, reassure them, and help them slow down their breathing, as it often mimics life-threatening conditions but improves with psychological support and relaxation techniques. These simple yet crucial steps can save lives and prevent complications in emergencies.
