WHAT IS COMMUNITY RADIO?

Community radio is a radio service offering a third model of radio broadcasting in addition to commercial and public broadcasting. Community stations serve geographic communities and communities of interest. They broadcast content that is popular and relevant to a local, specific audience but is often overlooked by commercial or mass-media broadcasters. Community radio stations are operated, owned, and influenced by the communities they serve. They are generally nonprofit and provide a mechanism for enabling individuals, groups, and communities to tell their own stories, to share experiences and, in a media-rich world, to become creators and contributors of media.

We pass our BA and MA examinations, we cram ourselves with loads of learning, but the intellect gains neither vigour nor maturity…And so the domestic feud between learning and life goes on growing, each bitterly and incessantly mocking at each other.

Radio could be the most wonderful public communication system imaginable, a gigantic system of channels -- could be, that is, if it were capable not only of transmitting but of receiving, of making the listeners not only hear but also speak, not of isolating them but of connecting them.

RAVENSHAVIAN HONOURED FOR CONTRIBUTION IN MATHEMATICS

Former Ravenshavian and noted mathematician, Prof. Indulata Sukla was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award early this month for her pioneering work in Number Theory, Cryptography and Analysis.

Exactly 50 years ago, she was a postgraduate student of Mathematics in the erstwhile Ravenshaw College (1964-66). She was a boarder of Daya Women’s Hostel.

The Orissa Mathematical Society (OMS) felicitated her during its 42nd Annual Conference. Renowned mathematician and Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, 'Padma Shri' Prof. Ramachandran Balasubramanian gave the award.

Dr. Sukla, a former Professor of Mathematics at Sambalpur University, had the rare privilege to carry out doctoral research under the direct supervision of world famous mathematician Late Prof. Tribikram Pati (more popularly known as Prof. T. Pati).

Apart from Prof. T. Pati, her academic association with renowned English mathematician Late Prof. Brian Kuttner (1908-1992), who worked on Fourier Series, is another rare privilege and achievement in her life.

Her textbook, ‘Number Theory and Its Applications to Cryptography’ is widely followed by the postgraduate students of Orissa Universities. Her numerous research papers have been published in many top international journals. She has been invited to countries like Canada, USA, Switzerland, Japan and China to present papers in conferences such as the prestigious International Congress ofMathematicians (ICM). Her first foreign visit in 1987 to the historic Laval University, the oldest centre of education in Canada, is a memorable event for her.

A popular and revered teacher among her students, she has also supervised many doctoral fellows during her illustrious academic career. At present, she resides in Cuttack since her retirement in 2004.

Ravenshaw Radio congratulates her for receiving the prestigious award.
