Sri Aurobindo: "What is it you want?"

Agaram Rangia : Well, Sir, I have come to you to seek your blessings and guidance.

Sri Aurobindo : What is your ideal in life?

Agaram Rangia : The ideal of human life is service of humanity.

Sri Aurobindo : Service of humanity? I am not a servant humanity. I am a servant of God.

Agaram Rangia : Well, Sir, all scriptures, all teachers and everyone have been telling us that service of humanity is the highest objective in life, that service of humanity is service of God.

Sri Aurobindo : Yes. No doubt, service of humanity is a laudable objective; but humanity is not God. Humanity is a fleeting thing. The humanity that we see to-day will not be existing some years later. But God is eternal. I am not a servant of humanity. I am a servant of God.

Agaram Rangia : I felt very much enlightened at this contrast between God and humanity made out so clearly and in such a simple manner. And I have cherished this feeling of enlightenment ever since.

Question by the students from Madras : Well, Sir, what is your opinion about the change in the Congress creed, defining it as Swaraj, eliminating the words "within the British Empire"?

SRI AUROBINDO : "Come on, you tell me. You have been listening to speeches, reading papers and discussing among yourselves. If you have not yet formed your own opinion, what is the good of my burdening you with mine? You give me your opinion."

Q : About the vital world described in “Love and Death” you said that “those who live exclusively in the physical and the vital go there after death”. Does it follow that even animals and plants have to go there? How do they manage to come out from there?

THE MOTHER : Except for very rare cases, the animals are not individualised and when they die they return to the spirit of the species.

💥Regarding Kali Puja / Deepavali / Festivals :

🌷The Mother : (The day before ‘Kali Puja,’ the ritual festival devoted each year in India to the goddess Kali, the warrior aspect of the universal Mother) She has already been here for two days and ... Oh, yesterday especially, she was so ... in such a mood! – like a warrior.

⭐Q : (Regarding the storm that coincided with Kali Puja.)Has Kali calmed down?
🌷The Mother : Maybe she got dampened! She laughed.... She can laugh, too!

🌷The Mother : Mother Kali will be with you on this day.

🌷The Mother : (Regarding a prayer for Kali Puja Day) It is all right, my children, but it is not enough to pray; you must also make a persevering effort.

🌷The Mother : Those small packets which I give on Kali Puja day are made to be preserved for one year.

🌷The Mother : …on Kali Puja day I always distribute the flowers of “Divine’s Love”; for Kali is the most loving of all the aspects of the Mahashakti; hers is the most active and most powerful Love. And that is why every year I distribute the petals of “Divine’s Love” on Kali’s Day.

⭐Huta : …she(The Mother) went into a trance for quite some time. When she awoke, she looked at me with her shining eyes and told me gravely: 🌷“There is a danger in this world. They are killing people, bombarding and sinking boats. For the last two days I have been busy settling things. I want peace, harmony and unity in this world - I want the Divine's 149 Victory upon earth. I have been seeing Kali at night for the last two days and I have asked her to make the world conscious and open to the Supramental Light and transform it by this Light without violence, pain and destruction. I want victory of the Divine in the world. Do you know, tomorrow is Kali Puja - the day of Kali ?” ⭐And she(The Mother) smiled tenderly. Her eyes shone with love and compassion.

⭐Q : What is the origin, significance and purpose of festivals such as Deepavali, Dasera, Rakhipurnima, etc.—and also some of the western festivals? On these days do the gods respond more to human aspirations? Thirdly, what is the connection between the inner truth and the external functions of these festivals? Lastly, what should be our attitude towards these festivals?)
🌷The Mother : Men like festivals.

⭐Q : Does it then mean that they are men’s fancy and whim? Have they no meaning and no utility?
🌷The Mother : It is men who give a meaning to festivals in order to legitimate their presence.

⭐Q : Are not these festivals in any way useful to the spiritual life of a people?
🌷Sri Aurobindo : They are useful to the religious life (they develop a certain kind of Bhakti), not to the spiritual. … Thus the celebration of the birthday of Krishna – if one can take it in the right attitude it can be made of powerful spiritual significance. Then, when large numbers of people combine together in faith, a very favourable atmosphere is created for the development of bhakti.

Before birth we were; after death we shall be. Nor are our birth and death a single episode without continuous meaning or sequel; it is one episode out of many...

...to see the Truth in its entirety, you must cross over to the OTHER SIDE. And when you cross over to the OTHER SIDE, you do not see a sum of multiple truths nor a countless number of truths added one to another, which you see one after another so that you cannot grasp the whole all at once. When you rise above, it is the whole that you see first; the whole presents itself all at once, in its entirety, in its wholeness, without division. And then you ... no longer see things successively, one after another; you have the simultaneous vision of a whole that exists as a unity. Then the choice is simply a vision.

In the initial stage of the Sadhana, the higher consciousness of the person gets the touch of the Mother’s blessing or grace. The material mind and vital of the person hanker after worldly pleasures. They don’t cherish the Mother’s grace, nor do they accept the same; the stuff of the physical being is only Matter; it does not possess anything of its own. It is being guided by the mind and the vital. All these impure and uncultured mind and vital remain under the clutches of the force which opposes the Divine. That power making these its instruments and bringing in the suspicion, disbelief, lust, anger, greed, attachment obstructs the path of the Mother’s grace. It is always trying to drag the person away from the divine path and place various obstacles and difficulties on the way. As long as the authority of the hostile forces prevail in any insignificant part of the being of the individual, till that time, they are trying at the hazard of life, to hinder the path of the Mother’s grace. When the whole being of the individual is completely surrendered to the Mother without any reservation, his being is possessed by the Shakti of the Mother’s grace. He is completely guided by Truth. He resides in Truth, bliss and supreme peace. Any physical, superphysical sorrow and distress gets immediately destroyed when it enters the aura of his residence. His mind, body and soul which have been surrendered, get transformed into their divine essence by the supramental Power. He is completely liberated from the subjugation of the disease, old age and death, and the illusion of ignorance. This is only the true identity of the person.
