Sri Sri Centre for Translation and Interpreting Studies, Sri Sri University heartily welcomes the decision of the Union Cabinet to confer classical language status to five languages: Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit.
In 2004, while declaring Tamil as the "Classical Language," the Govt. of India decided to create this new category of classifying languages of India. In 2005, Sanskrit was conferred upon the status. Telugu and Kannada were included in this prestigious list in 2008. Malayalam was designated Classical Language status in 2013 while Odia received the same distinction in 2014.
In order to encourage the study and preservation of languages that are recognised as "classical," the government will offer several privileges to these five languages, which are now included. For instance, two prestigious international prizes are bestowed yearly to academics who have done outstanding work in the fields of classical Indian language study, education, and advocacy. For the purpose of doing cutting-edge research on all of the ancient languages, the government will also set up Centres of Excellence in Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali, and Prakrit. Also, central universities and research institutes in India may count on funding from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish professional chairs dedicated to these languages.
SSCTIS has been actively engaged in Odia and Tamil since last year, with intentions to expand into Assamese and Bengali in the future. We are optimistic that the centre will play an important role in advancing Indian language studies and promoting awareness of these languages.
