FREE LEGAL AWARENESS SESSION AT BANESWAR KHABSA HIGH SCHOOL, BANESWAR

On 8th June 2026, students of Indian Institute of Legal Studies Cooch Behar stepped out to do what lawyers are truly meant to do — make the law accessible to those who need it most. A dedicated Legal Awareness Session was conducted at Baneswar Khabsa High School under the able guidance of Ms. Rachana Dhar, bringing together nine enthusiastic law students . The session was a reminder that legal knowledge is not a privilege — it is a right every citizen deserves to exercise.

Suman Ray (LLB VI) opened the discussion by addressing a question that affects millions across the country — what happens when someone needs justice but cannot afford it? Suman walked the students through the constitutional guarantee under Article 39A, which places a duty on the State to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disability.
Bittu Sha (BA LLB VIII) took on one of the most relevant topics of our time — consumer protection in the age of e-commerce. With online shopping becoming a daily habit for young people, Bittu carefully explained the rights available under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, including the right to be informed, the right to choose, and the right to seek redressal.
Anushmita Ray (LLB IV) brought a constitutional lens to the session with her engaging presentation on what legal scholars refer to as the Golden Triangle — the interconnected relationship between Articles 14, 19, and 21 of the Indian Constitution. She explained how the right to equality, the right to freedom of speech and expression, and the right to life and personal liberty are not standalone provisions but form a protective triad that reinforces each other.
The session was carried forward with full enthusiasm by the entire student delegation — Susmita Sutradhar, Tanuja Saha, Runa Layla, Surajit Das (LLB IV), Priya Sharma, and Tandra Ghosh (LLB II) — who actively supported the programme through coordination, interaction with school students, and on-ground engagement. Their collective effort made this outreach a truly enriching experience for both the presenters and the audience.

1st Intra-Class A.D.R. Competition, 2026

The 1st Intra-Class A.D.R. Competition was conducted on 8th June, 2026 for the students of B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), Semester VIII as part of the practical component of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (A.D.R.) course.

A total of 35 students participated, forming 12 teams across 6 groups. The competition was based on three propositions: Commercial Dispute, Hindu Family Property Dispute, and Restitution of Conjugal Rights.

The arbitral proceedings were adjudicated by:

- Groups 1 & 2: Mr. Soumyajit Mukherjee
- Groups 3 & 4: Mr. Shuvam Ghosh
- Groups 5 & 6: Ms. Upasana Bishnu

The event was conducted under the guidance of Ms. Prerna Lama, Convenor of the Debate Society and A.D.R. Practical Teacher. The competition provided students with practical exposure to arbitral proceedings and enhanced their advocacy, analytical, and dispute resolution skills.

OBSERVATION OF WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Indian Institute of Legal Studies Cooch Behar organised a special programme on 5th June 2026. The event aimed to create awareness among students about the importance of protecting our natural environment and to encourage a sense of ecological responsibility within the campus community.

The Institute was honoured to welcome Dr. Satarupa Ghosh, Coordinator and Assistant Professor, Department of Law, Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University, as the Chief Guest of the programme.

As part of the celebration, students enthusiastically participated in a sapling plantation drive within the college premises.

The activity served as a meaningful expression of the values that Environmental Law seeks to uphold, translating awareness into action.

LEGAL AID AND AWARENESS SESSION

The Indian Institute of Legal Studies, Cooch Behar, organized a Legal Aid and Awareness Session at Baudiar Danga High School on 8th June 2026 to promote legal literacy and awareness among students.
The programme focused on important legal issues, including the significance of legal education and legal aid, constitutional rights and duties, the Golden Triangle of the Constitution, the Juvenile Justice System, and the protection of child labour.
The session was conducted by –
1. Ms. Shilpi Dhar, Assistant Professor of Law – Importance of Legal Education and Legal Aid in the Contemporary Era.
2. Mr. Subhadeep Das (LL.B, Semester IV) – An Understanding of the Golden Triangle and the Constitution of India
3. Ms. Sonia Pandit (LL.B, Semester IV) – Juvenile Justice System: Legal Rights of Children in Conflict with the Law and Children with Needs and Protection
4. Ms. Tulsi Debnath (LL.B, Semester IV) – Protection of Child labour

The session concluded with an interactive discussion and question-and-answer segment, which witnessed enthusiastic participation from the students. The programme successfully enhanced legal awareness and encouraged young learners to become informed and responsible citizens.

Final Round - 7th Intra-Moot Court Competition, 2026

The Moot Court Society of the Indian Institute of Legal Studies Cooch Behar, successfully concluded its 7th Intra-Moot Court Competition, 2026. The competition commenced on 19th May 2026 with the enthusiastic participation of 36 teams and culminated in a keenly contested Final Round on 5th June 2026.
This year's moot proposition placed participants before one of the most challenging intersections of constitutional law and criminal procedure, the right to privacy under Article 21 of the Constitution of India in conflict with the State’s power to criminalise personal conduct under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
The Final Round was presided over by the esteemed Dr. Satrupa Ghosh, Assistant Professor and Coordinator, Department of Law, Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University, whose presence on the Bench lent the proceedings a spirit of academic gravitas and professional rigour. The finalists argued before the Bench with remarkable composure, clarity of thought, and command over the legal issues, qualities that reflected the depth of preparation that had gone into their participation.
At the conclusion of the Final Round, Dr. Satrupa Ghosh announced the results. The team from B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) Semester VI, led by Ms. Priyangana Dutta, was declared the Winner of the 7th Intra-Moot Court Competition, 2026. The team from LL.B. Semester II, led by Ms. Puja Paul, was adjudged the Runner-Up. Ms. Simpi Priya Choudhary was awarded the title of Best Speaker for her outstanding oral advocacy throughout the competition.
The 7th Intra-Moot Court Competition has, once again, demonstrated the growing legal acumen, advocacy skills, and intellectual maturity of the students. The competition serves not merely as an academic exercise but as a formative experience one that brings students closest to the realities of courtroom practice and instils in them the discipline, preparation, and presence of mind that the legal profession demands.
The Moot Court Society places on record its sincere gratitude to Dr. Jayati Kharga, Principal-in-Charge, Indian Institute of Legal Studies Cooch Behar, for her unwavering support and encouragement in organising this event. FREE LEGAL AWARENESS PROGRAM AT TUFANGANJ ILADEVI GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL

Indian Institute of Legal Studies Cooch Behar has successfully conducted a Legal Awareness Program at Tufanganj Iladevi Girls' High School, aimed at empowering young minds with knowledge of their rights and legal protections.
Under the dedicated guidance of Mr. Anit Kumar and Ms. Rachana Dhar, the students of LL.B IV delivered impactful sessions on critical social and legal issues:
Ms. Laxmi Saha spoke on "POCSO Act and Child Marriage" — shedding light on the legal framework that protects children from abuse and the serious consequences of child marriage under Indian law.
Ms. Supriya Sarkar addressed "Legal Rights and Protection for Girls & Women Empowerment through Education" — emphasizing how education is the most powerful tool for women's empowerment and highlighting key legal rights every girl must know.
Ms. Rani Kundu presented on "Legal Awareness on Human Trafficking and Child Trafficking" — raising awareness about the harsh realities of trafficking and the laws in place to combat it.
This initiative stands as a testament to our belief that legal literacy is a cornerstone of a just and empowered society. By taking these conversations directly into schools, our students are not just learning the law — they are becoming voices of change in their communities.

A Study on the Effectiveness of Mediation Proceedings Conducted by the District Legal Services Authority, Cooch Behar
As part of the academic curriculum of B.A. LL.B. VIII Semester, the following students visited the Alternative Dispute Resolution (A.D.R.) Centre, Cooch Behar, on 1st June, 2026 to observe mediation proceedings conducted under the aegis of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Cooch Behar:
