Researchers from ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBFGR) have discovered two new marine species from Indian watersโ€”a tiny porcelain crab, Pachycheles ravichandrani, from the coral reefs of Lakshadweep, and a new snake eel, Bascanichthys chepakakiensis, from the Bay of Bengal.

The porcelain crab discovery was published in Zootaxa in the article titled โ€œPachycheles ravichandrani, a new species of porcelain crab from Lakshadweep, India (Crustacea: Decapoda: Porcellanidae)โ€.

The snake eel discovery was published in the Journal of Ichthyology in the article titled โ€œA New Snake Eel Species of Bascanichthys (Ophichthidae) from the Bay of Bengal Supported by Morphology and Mitochondrial Analysis.โ€

These discoveries enrich our understanding of Indiaโ€™s remarkable marine biodiversity and highlight the importance of continued scientific exploration of our marine ecosystems.
