GVY
Empowering rural artisans with a blend of tradition and technology! Under the Gramodyog Vikas Yojana (GVY), KVIC is revolutionizing the Wellness and Cosmetics Industry (WCI) by providing a platform for sustainable growth. From the aromatic mastery of Agarbatti making to the specialized production of high-quality bathing soaps, hair oils, and shampoos, KVIC ensures that every village product competes with the best. This initiative equips artisans with technological modernization, advanced training, and common facility centers to turn local craftsmanship into global excellence.
Through this sub-scheme, KVIC is not just promoting beauty and toiletries; the organization is fostering a self-reliant ecosystem for rural entrepreneurs. By enhancing production capacity and product quality, the GVY scheme significantly boosts the income of artisans and preserves the heritage of village industries. From Wild Streams to Sustainable Success
In the clear hill streams of the upper Brahmaputra lives a striking ornamental fish—Channa stewartii (Assamese snakehead / অসমীয়া শোল). With growing demand and a market value of ₹600–1200 per pair, the species has been largely sourced from the wild, raising concerns about overexploitation and habitat pressure.
To address this, the ICAR-CIFRI initiated focused research at its Guwahati Regional Centre under AINP on Ornamental Fish Breeding and Culture. Beginning in April 2024, around 30 brooders (200–230 g) were acclimatized in carefully designed semi-natural systems using sand, bamboo, and refugia. With precise water quality management and live feed, the fish matured successfully.
A Historic Breakthrough
In April 2026, India achieved its first successful captive breeding and larval rearing of Channa stewartii—entirely hormone-free.
• Fecundity: 1,578–2,769 eggs
• Egg size: ~820 µm
• Hatching success: 73%
• Larvae: ~8.4 mm, healthy and active
Why It Matters
This development reduces dependence on wild populations, supports biodiversity conservation, and offers a scalable, eco-friendly model for ornamental fisheries. It also opens new livelihood opportunities for farmers and youth through aquapreneurship.
The Way Forward
The technology is ready for scaling under PMMSY, with strong potential for adoption through ICAR institutes, KVKs, and State Fisheries Departments.
A step where science protects nature while creating sustainable livelihoods.
