Sahitya Akademi announced its annual Awards for 2018 in 24 languages. Seven books of poetry, six novels, six short stories, three of literary criticism and two of essays have won the Sahitya Akademi Awards, 2018.

17. Short-story writer, Mushtaq Ahmad Mushtaq, bagged the Award for his collection of short stories “AAKH’’.
The awards will be presented at a roadshow function to be held on 29th January 2019 at New Delhi during the Festival of Letters to the organized by Sahitya Akademi. Yogendra Nath Sharma was awarded the Bhasha Salman for the North zone; G Venkatasubbiah for South zone; Gagendra Nath Das for the Eastern zone; and Shailaja Bapat for the Western zone.

India has moved up six places to 60th among 130 nations on the Global Innovation Index 2017.

India has moved up six places to 60th among 130 nations on the Global Innovation Index 2017. So, now, two years in a row India has managed to improve its ranking and the achievement becomes significant as it came after five years of continuous drop in rankings before 2016.

India re-elected to UN body on economic, social issues; Pakistan loses out

India has been re-elected to the UN’s principal organ on economic, social and environmental issues for another three-year term.

India was among 18 nations to win election to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). India obtained 183 votes, the second highest after Japan in the Asia Pacific category.

Israeli author David Grossman has won the Man Booker International Prize 2017 for his novel 'A Horse Walks Into a Bar'.

Grossman beat five other finalists, including fellow Israeli author Amos Oz, for the counterpart to Britain's prestigious Booker Prize. Grossman's novel is about a failing stand-up comic and his final performance.

The Man Booker Prize was established in 1969. The winner receives £50,000 as well as the £2,500 awarded to each of the shortlisted authors.

Dr Neeru Chadha has become the first Indian woman to be a member of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). The eminent lawyer, and the first Indian woman to become the chief legal adviser in the Ministry of External Affairs, was elected to the ITLOS for a nine-year term from 2017 to 2026.

Dr Chadha won the election on 14 June with 120 votes, the highest in the Asia Pacific group and was elected in the first round of voting itself. The candidate from Indonesia got 58 votes, Lebanon 60 and Thailand 86.

The election victory makes Chadha the first Indian woman in a top UN position after Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, who famously served as the President of the United Nations General Assembly.

She also represented India in the 2016 ICJ hearings when the Marshall Islands accused India of not taking its disarmament obligations seriously as a nuclear weapons state.
Dr Chadha was the first woman Chief Adviser to the Ministry of External Affairs and graduated from the University of Michigan and the University of Delhi. She was part of the Legal and Treaties Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, which advises the government on matters pertaining to international law. She went on to become its head in 2012.

While Dr Chadha herself is a fine example of a woman breaking the glass ceiling, she’s also aware of and vocal about the challenges posed by gender in society and professional life. Dr Chadha’s doctoral thesis advocated for a level playing field for women and while she believes that affirmative action may be necessary in the short term, she says paternalism in the long run will only do more harm than good.

ITLOS is an intergovernmental body that was created by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The world’s oceans don’t fall under a single nation’s sovereign space and, so, need to be governed by all those who use them. This is where the Law of the Sea comes in and Dr Chadha is now part of the body that will deal with all matters concerning disputes regarding these laws.
While she may not be the first Indian member of ITLOS, her entry as the first Indian woman to the body is a significant for Indian women. Her solid credentials and the fact that she’s irrefutably deserving of the post are solid for a lot of young women out there.

NOBEL PRIZE FOR MEDICINE 2016

The Nobel prize in medicine has been awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi for his discoveries on how the body’s cells detoxify and repair themselves.

Autophagy is essentially the body’s internal recycling program - scrap cells are hunted down and the useful parts are stripped out to generate energy or create new cells. It is a crucial process to prevent cancerous growths, and, by maintaining a healthy metabolism, helps protect against conditions like diabetes.

Yoshinori Ohsumi used baker’s yeast to identify genes essential for autophagy. He then went on to elucidate the underlying mechanisms for autophagy in yeast and showed that similar sophisticated machinery is used in human cells.

HL Dattu the new chairperson of National Human Rights Commission

H L Dattu took charge as the Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission.
He is the Former Chief Justice of India. He is the seventh Chairperson of the human rights commission.

The chairperson and members of the commission are appointed by the President on the recommendation of the high-powered committee headed by the Prime Minister.

The committee had cleared the name of Justice Dattu for the post last week.
The post was lying vacant for the last eight months after the retirement of Justice K G Balakrishnan.

Justice Dattu had retired as Chief Justice of India on 2nd December last year. He will have a tenure of five years.

NASA - India to jointly explore Mars

After the success of Mars Orbiter Mission(MOM), India and US are likely to collaborate on the mission to the Red planet.
In future, India and the U.S. could jointly explore Mars and who knows an Indian astronaut could also head to the Red planet on a joint mission.

India’s maiden mission to the Red Planet, Mangalyaan, has opened the eyes of the world on ISRO’s capabilities at undertaking low cost, high value inter-planetary mission.

Charles Elachi, director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory or JPL, a part of NASA and an institution better known for piloting most of the American planetary exploration efforts with rovers like Curiosity, says India and the U.S. could jointly explore Mars and even invited India to send astronauts to the Red Planet.

Former CAG Vinod Rai was on Sunday appointed first Chairman of the Banks Board Bureau, which will advise the government on top-level appointments at public sector lenders and ways to address the bad loans problem among other issues.
Mr. Rai was the Comptroller and Auditor General between January 2008 and May 2013, during which a number of CAG reports led to various scams including in the telecom and coal sectors coming to light.

The bureau will give recommendations on appointment of directors in public sector banks and advise on ways to raise funds and mergers and acquisitions to the lenders.

There are 22 state-owned banks in India including SBI, IDBI Bank and Bhartiya Mahila Bank.

The BBB was earlier proposed by the government as a body of eminent professionals and officials, which will replace the Appointments Board for appointment of Whole-time Directors as well as non-Executive Chairman of PSBs.

They will also constantly engage with the Board of Directors of all the public sector banks to formulate appropriate strategies for their growth and development.

The bureau will search and select heads of public sector banks and help them develop differentiated strategies of capital raising plans to innovative financial methods and instruments.

Lok Sabha passes Election Laws (Amendment) Bill 2016

The Lok Sabha has passed the Election Law (Amendment) Bill 2016 to amend electoral laws to allow a limited delimitation exercise in West Bengal for granting voting rights to people who became Indian citizens following the exchange of enclaves with Bangladesh.
The bill seeks to amend the Delimitation Act, 2002 and the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
It enables the Election Commission to carry out a limited delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal following the exchange of 51 Bangladeshi and 111 Indian enclaves in July last year.
The enclaves were exchanged pursuant to the 1974 Land Boundary Agreement and 2011 Protocol and Instruments of Ratification during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh last year.
Currently, the Election Commission is looking into the issue of granting voting rights to the people who came from Bangladesh under the exchange of enclaves.
As far as their rehabilitation is concerned the State government will case and the Central government will provide all required assistance.

Three Information Commissioners appointed

Government of India has appointed three information commissioners in the Central Information Commission.

1. Shri Bimal Julka (IAS) - Madhya Pradesh
2. Amitava Bhattacharya (IAS) - Gujarat
3. Divya Prakash Sinha (IAS) - Manipur

The newly appointed commissioners will serve for the term of 5 years or until they reach the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier as per the provisions of the RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT 2005.

Thus the total strength of Information Commissioners including the Chief Information Commissioner has been increased to 11.

India expects its economy to grow 7-7.5% in the fiscal year to March 2017, the Economic Survey said on Friday, ahead of the presentation of the annual budget by finance minister Arun Jaitley on Monday.
The Economic Survey, the basis for Jaitley's Budget for the fiscal year starting April 1, projected India to grow 8% in the next couple of years.
The survey was prepared by the finance ministry's chief economic adviser Arvind Subramanian.
Following are the highlights of the report:
FISCAL DEFICIT
* 2015/16 fiscal deficit seen at 3.9 percent of GDP seems achievable
* 2016/17 expected to be challenging from fiscal point of view
* Credibility and optimality argue for adhering to 3.5% of GDP fiscal deficit target
* Time is right for a review of medium-term fiscal framework
INFLATION
* CPI inflation seen around 4.5 to 5% in 2016/17
* Low inflation has taken hold, confidence in price stability has improved* Expect RBI to meet 5 percent inflation target by March 2017
* Prospect of lower oil prices over medium term likely to dampen inflationary expectations
* Low inflation has taken hold, confidence in price stability has improved

CURRENT ACCOUNT DEFICIT
* 2016/17 current account deficit seen around 1-1.5% of GDP
CURRENCY
* Rupee's value must be fair, avoiding strengthening; fair value can be achieved through monetary relaxation
* India needs to prepare itself for a major currency readjustment in Asia in wake of a similar adjustment in China
* Gradual depreciation in rupee can be allowed if capital inflows are weak
TAXES
* Proposes widening tax net from 5.5% of earning individuals to more than 20%
* Tax revenue expected to be higher than budgeted levels in FY15/16
* Easiest way to widen the tax base would be not to raise exemption thresholds
