Congratulation Dr. Maneesha Sudheer and the landslide research team.

Our Dean of International Programs, Dr. Maneesha Ramesh, professor and Director, Amrita Center for Wireless Networks and Applications ( ) has been appointed in the Advisory committee for the landslide/debris flow of Kerala State Disaster Management Authority. The advisory committee comprises five members and the primary role of the committee is to help the Disaster Management Authority in developing plans to mitigate landslide disasters in various places in .

As an integral part of the committee, we will be consulted and required to contribute in the following ways: 1. To help the disaster management authority in developing specific plans for Landslide preparedness. 2. Upon request from the authority, visit various landslide sites for conducting study and submit report so as to help the authority in making decisions 3. Visit quarry sites in order to ensure that they adhere to the instructions disseminated by the authority to prevent landslides. 4. To help the disaster management authority in developing landslide prevention & preparedness plans for districts & the State. 5. To help the authority in preparing Landslide mitigation plans for getting funds from the Central Government.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham was awarded the ‘World Centre of Excellence on Landslide Disaster Reduction’ by the International Program on Landslides (IPL) at the fourth World Landslide Forum, which was held at Ljubljana, Slovenia from 29th May-2nd June, 2017. AmritaWNA had successfully deployed the world’s first wireless sensor network system for detection and early warning of landslides in Munnar, Kerala. At the request of the Indian Government, a similar technology was deployed at Sikkim, Northeast Himalayas.

Headed by Dr. Maneesha, the first landslide laboratory in India was set up in 2008 by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. This serves as a test bed for development and validation of systems deployed in landslide prone areas. It can create small landslides under controlled conditions and act as a feedback system for field deployment. The Center has also initiated a landslide research project with the British Geological Society and UK Met Office called the "Landslip". This project was initiated to develop regional thresholds for landslide warning from the real-time data of Amrita’s field deployment in the Himalayas and the Western Ghats. It also includes an early warning system to reduce landslide risk.
