CHENNAI: Contrary to the usual style, several bottles of hand sanitizers were made available at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital on Friday.
Doctors, nurses, staff, patients and their bystanders were encouraged to use the locally made alcohol based instant hand sanitizers to disinfect their hands.
The college of pharmacy attached to the Madras Medical College has developed the antiseptic solution for using in college. The cost of making a 200ml
bottle is Rs 80 compared to Rs 250 for its commercial counterpart, said hospital dean Dr. R Jayanthi. “We tested the solution and it is effective. Every
month, we use at least 800 bottles of hand sanitizers here. The sanitizers will be made available in hallways, wards, theatres, classrooms, rest rooms and canteen,” she said.
Studies have shown that use of alcohol-based hand rubs is helpful in curbing the spread of stomach ache and intestinal bugs, especially in areas where soap
or water is not available. “When we make our own product, it is cost-effective and we can be sure of adding the right ingredients. These scrubs work only
when there is right amount of alcohol. When we make it we are sure of the ingredients,” she said.
The product is currently being used only at the general hospital and on the college campus. However, the management is planning to apply for permission
to produce sanitizers so that it can be distributed to other centres. The pharmacy college is working on also developing and manufacturing drugs, including
some herbal molecules, she said. The hospital also inaugurated a yoga hall on Friday, where experts conduct yoga sessions for patients and their attenders.
