Over the past two days, there have been protests and objections regarding LIC's website defaulting to Hindi, raising concerns about inclusivity in a linguistically diverse country.

This debate isn’t just about language. It’s about thinking from the customer’s perspective. Any business—government or private—must cater to the widest audience possible, embracing diversity.

But we often overlook this.

Consider the 2013 campaign "Jaanoge Tabhi Toh Maanoge" by Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund. Its intent was admirable: to educate investors about mutual funds and debunk myths. However, the website name, https://www.jaanotohmaano. com, meaning "You’ll believe only if you understand," might not have resonated with non-Hindi speakers. While well-meaning, it risked alienating a part of the audience. Of course, the website is not in use anymore.

This highlights the importance of Julia Galef's Scout Mindset —approaching decisions with curiosity, humility, and objectivity to avoid biases. Businesses, especially, must adopt this mindset to truly think from the customer’s perspective and ensure inclusivity.
