Elephants are the largest land mammals, known as keystone species because they play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystems. They are protected in India under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and are central to conservation efforts like Project Elephant to reduce human–elephant conflict and protect habitats.
