1974 BATCH REUNION (50TH) – 4th & 5th January 2024

Meeting schoolmates is always good fun, its a time when all of us become boys again! Its true, social media especially Whatsapp had brought us together again, but that was only in the digital world, here we were actually meeting each other in flesh and blood, which is always special. The excitement was palpable, when 63 of us finally met on 4th January 2024 for the Golden reunion of our 1974 batch.

04 JANUARY 2024 | ART BISTRO
The evening began with a rendition of the School anthem led by a small group and some online help, slowly building crescendo with Virtus in Arduis. This was followed by a medley of performances starting with Rajaram’s school report, punctuated with a series of relatable anecdotes and mimicry from Harikrishna, Vijay, Sam and Joseph. A short energetic Mridangam performance by Giri was followed by Bhasker on the guitar crooning Cottonfields – CCR & Surangani. Udaya then treated us to an old Tamil number and handed over the stage to Niteen whose magical voice brought Kishore Kumar alive. More song and dance, a goodies bag from Dhanapal and a lovely dinner brought the curtains down on a memorable evening.

05 JANUARY 2024 | SCHOOL
Day 2 of the Golden woke up to a lazy morning followed by a delectable buffet at Bhangra owned by our own mate Navtej and sponsored by our gracious NRI buddies. After the lunch the scene shifted to our School where the finals of the Class of ’74 Table Tennis tournament for the Juniors and Sub juniors was conducted.
High tea was served to all teachers and support staff, followed by distribution of gifts to the support staff sponsored by a few of our classmates. At the official function graced by the administrative faculty of the school and represented by Shadaan and Rose of DBPPA, Mahesh announced a series of welfare activities for the support staff of the school in association with DBPPA. The school events culminated with a spirited game of Crocker under the lights.

The Class of ’74 is grateful to the School admin and DBPPA office bearers led by Sujit for supporting all our school activities and making it a very memorable evening for those who attended.
We would be continuing with the Class of ’74 TT tournament each year and probably adding a competition for the Alumni batches.

The next day some flew to Sri Lanka for an extended weekend of celebrations while the rest savoured fond memories and looked forward to meeting again.

Anjuman-e-Himayath-e-Islam (Anjuman) is a charitable institution, primarily serving as an orphanage for children from destitute families. The Boys' Home accommodates about 400 boys who are provided with free shelter, school education, food, and clothing by the Anjuman management, comprised of philanthropists serving on a voluntary basis.

On April 11, 2024, at 11:30 AM, DBPPA Egmore organized an ice cream event for the children of Anjuman in T Nagar on the occasion of Eid. The Executive Committee members of the DB PPA met and interacted with the children, who enjoyed the ice creams on a warm day and thanked the DBPPA members for making their festival special. It was heart-warming to see the children well-dressed, communicating effectively, mostly in English, and displaying confidence and orientation. They showed an understanding of the importance of education and sports. The visit was a delightful experience, as usual, for all the past pupils who interacted with the children at Anjuman.

DBPPA Egmore has always celebrated diversity in its community service and outreach projects. We thank the Anjuman management for giving us this opportunity.

WORKez–DBPPA Crocker World Cup 2024 – February 25, 2024 - was a sporting event as competitive as ever, held at DBPPA Egmore.

The event started at 12:30 PM with the inauguration ceremony and match draws. To add some fun and excitement to the event, the following prominent alumni participated in the inauguration:
Sanjay Wadhwa (Batch of '83), Director at AP International, a pioneer in South Indian film entertainment and a fervent supporter of all PPA activities;
Sunil Reddy (Batch of '90), Founder and MD of WorkEZ (our proud sponsors), who ardently supports all PPA activities, sponsoring numerous events, including last year's Crocker World Cup;
Actor Prashanth (Batch of '90), known for hits like Chembaruthi, Thiruda Thiruda, and Jeans;
Pattabhi Rama Rao (Batch of '90), Operating Partner at GOURMET POPCORNICA, also a fervent supporter of all PPA activities.

After the qualifiers and quarter-finals, the following teams made it to the semis: 1990- DB 90 Warriors, 1997- 97 Red Hawks, 2002- Rising Dons, and 2005 – DB’05.
In the semis

• DB’05 beat Rising Dons (2002)
• 90 Warriors beat 97 Red Hawks

In a repeat of last year’s finals, this year's final was also very competitive and closely contested. Batting first, DB’05 set a stiff target of 142 (the highest score in a final). The DB 90 Warriors had a strong start in their chase but eventually needed 32 runs in the final over. Despite their best efforts, they fell short by 4 runs, finishing with 138 in 6 overs.

The prizes were distributed by Rev. Fr. Xavier Pakiam, Rector, Master Michael Meenakshi Sundaram, Past Presidents Ashok Chelliah and Gopalakroshnan, and Sunil Reddy, MD of WorkEZ.
It was another great day of competition and friendship among the past pupils of Don Bosco Egmore.

Vijay Amritraj Inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame - Felicitation at Don Bosco Egmore, 19th February 2024

Vijay Amritraj has become the first Indian to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, a momentous achievement celebrated with a special felicitation event at Don Bosco, Egmore.

Schooling:

Vijay Amritraj transferred to Don Bosco from Church Park in 5th standard and graduated in 1968. By then, he had already established himself as a top tennis player at both the state and national levels.

Career:

Since becoming a globally recognized name as an athlete in the 1970s and 1980s, Amritraj has used his profile to spread the sport of tennis throughout India and the Asian continent. Amritraj’s trailblazing success on the ATP Tour popularized the sport and inspired a generation of new players. Amritraj was one of India’s greatest players in the Open Era, anchoring India’s Davis Cup squad to its only two Finals appearances in 1974 and 1987; in 1974, he played a key role in India’s boycott of the Final against South Africa to demonstrate against Apartheid.

His ventures into acting included notable roles such as the MI6 intelligence operative in the 1983 James Bond film "Oc*****sy" and in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" (1986).

Post-retirement, Amritraj has been a prominent tennis broadcaster, and as an administrator, he has been instrumental in expanding professional tennis in India. His humanitarian efforts include serving as a United Nations Messenger of Peace since 2001 and founding the Vijay Amritraj Foundation in 2006, which supports women and children in need in India.

Felicitation:

The felicitation event for his Tennis Hall of Fame induction took place at Don Bosco, Egmore, on 19th February 2024, during the morning assembly. The event, organized by the school and the Don Bosco Past Pupils Association Egmore, was attended by school students, Fathers, PPA members, distinguished alumni, including M.R. Rangaswami from the class of '70, and Meghanatha Reddy IAS from the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu.

Amritraj delivered a motivational speech, emphasizing the significant roles his parents and Don Bosco played in his achievements. He interacted with students, teachers, and staff, signing autographs, taking selfies, and posing for group photos, particularly with participants of the Don Bosco Football tournament.

He concluded by expressing his gratitude towards the school management and the PPA, noting the special significance of the event in his heart.

Vijay Amritraj remains one of the exceptional achievers produced by our school, embodying the lasting legacy of Don Bosco.

Happy Feast Day of St. John Bosco (January 31)

Saint John Bosco dedicated his life to the betterment and education of street children, juvenile delinquents, and other disadvantaged youth. He pioneered teaching methods that focused on love rather than punishment, creating environments that reduced the likelihood of sin.

Saint John Bosco passed away on January 31, 1888, in Turin, after a month-long period of exhaustion. His commitment was not just to the youth of Turin but to young people worldwide. Don Bosco's significant legacy endures through his Salesian priests, brothers, and sisters, who continue his mission on earth.

On Easter Sunday, April 1, 1934, Pope Pius XI canonized Don Bosco as a saint, praising him as 'a giant of sanctity.'"

Don Bosco Past Pupils Association conducted medical camps to aid the general public affected by the recent cyclone in Chennai. In collaboration with Don Bosco schools and past pupil doctors, along with other volunteers, the PPA organized Medical Camps on 9th & 10th December 2023 at the following Don Bosco Schools:

• Perambur

These centre's offered the following services, greatly benefiting the general public:
• General health check-ups

• Kishor Manohar (Batch 1993), Director of Apollo Shine, for their generous support with staffing, medication, and equipment.
