New paper out! ✨
What goes into making and maintaining a grinding stone?
This study explores the technological choices behind shaping and sustaining these tools over time.
Using 3D photogrammetry and detailed surface analysis, it rethinks grinding stones as dynamic technologies rather than static artefacts.

Three days of sparks, stone, and scholarship.

Over three days, “Lithics and Lives” connected people immersed in the prehistoric past: making, observing, and questioning; linking ancient technologies with modern analytical frameworks.

Organised by IIT Gandhinagar in collaboration with Sharma Centre for Heritage Education, the workshop bridged experimental practice and contemporary research, connecting past technologies with current researcch questions.

"The Story of a Handaxe": book release: for children of all ages
A morning where science, stories, and technology came together to celebrate our shared human past.
At the Sharma Centre for Heritage Education, we launched The Story of a Handaxe — a children’s book created from young minds and shaped by archaeology — along with the unveiling of our Homo erectus hologram, bringing early humans to life for today’s learners.
We were deeply honoured to welcome our Chief Guest, Mr. Antony Lobo, Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Spain in Chennai, who inaugurated both the book and the hologram, and spoke about the importance of global connections in education, culture, and heritage.
We also had with us Mrs. Vinolia Lobo — entrepreneur, designer, and cultural ambassador, who felicitated the children and encouraged them to keep imagining, creating, and questioning the world around them.
This programme would not have been possible without two very special collaborators:
Mrs. Sharadha Shankar, CEO of Pixel3i, whose immersive technology team helped transform our vision of a Homo erectus hologram into reality.
Mr. Joy Chakravorty, award-winning Creative Director based in Berlin, who designed the book and shaped the children’s artwork into a powerful visual story of the handaxe and human evolution.
The programme was introduced by Prof. Shanti Pappu, Founder & Secretary, SCHE, and Dr. Kumar Akhilesh, Director, SCHE, who also presented the vision behind the hologram and our outreach work.
The book itself grew out of a hands-on archaeology workshop supported by the PalaeoHome – INQUA HABCOM Project, where children learned about human evolution, excavation, and stone tools — and then turned those ideas into art, stories, and imagination.
From classroom creativity to printed pages…
From ancient tools to digital holograms…

For more information on the book please email: [email protected]
This programme was all about making prehistory accessible, exciting, and meaningful for children.
Because the story of the handaxe…
is really the story of us.
