Let's talk :)
Often times when we refer to health, we tend to highlight the importance of physical health and unintentionally forget about yet another crucial component of health- mental health. Without physical and mental health and well-being, one cannot achieve a holistic state of being. Bearing this in mind, we ask each and every one of you to join us in celebrating World Mental Health Day!
Spread the message and spread !

We are deeply saddened at the sudden demise of two campus residents named Dr. P. Maheswari(34), a married post-doctoral research scholar in Chemistry from Theni district(near Madurai), who was found hanging in the Sabarmati hostel on July 13th and G. Vijayalakshmi(47), spouse of a professor, who was found dead at her residence on the same day.
Words are inadequate to ease the pain their families and friends feel now. We would like to express our sincere condolences to their families and let them know that our prayers are with them.
A support system is provided by Mitr through Medall, a professional counselling unit, on campus. They can be approached with any emotional concern.

Update on the IIT Madras campus:
The condition inside the campus is relatively much better than rest of the city. Food and water is provided to all the students. Food is also available at eateries like Guru and Leo. Enough food has been stocked by the mess authorities, which should last for at least two more days.

"Depression, the Secret We share"
"The opposite of depression is not happiness, but vitality, and it was vitality that seemed to seep away from me in that moment." In a talk equal parts eloquent and devastating, writer Andrew Solomon takes you to the darkest corners of his mind during the years he battled depression. That led him to an eye-opening journey across the world to interview others with depression — only to discover that, to his surprise, the more he talked, the more people wanted to tell their own stories.

HOPE, NOT JUST WHEN YOU MOPE
When struck in a nerve breaking crazy traffic at 9.25 am while on your way to a meeting scheduled for 9.30 am - What would you do?
While eagerly waiting in front of the TV to watch your favourite program/match, just then the power shuts down - What would you do?
While sitting across the table with your boss anxiously waiting to hear from him/her for your appraisal meeting - What would you do?
After a long wait of holding on to a tender feeling towards your special someone and when the final day arrives for you to open the lid - What would you do?
While stepping out the exit door of your office after a ridiculously tiring day, holding your head up feeling the breeze brush your face gently - What would you do?
YOU HOPE. You hope to wade through the traffic to get in time for your meeting; you nail bitingly hope for the power to come before your program begins; you hopefully hope to get the appraisal you’ve secretly wished for; you desperately hope the love of your life receives your love; you cautiously hope to have a quiet evening at home and a soothing dinner to wrap your tedious day.
Challenges are always an inevitable part of our lives. In fact, the most unpredictable journey is life. You come across smooth and bumpy roads. The weather is constantly changing. Sometimes it’s breezy, chill and sometimes it’s terribly humid that it drains you out. Sometimes you have people travelling along with you, sometimes you are left alone. You may never know the speed in which you’re travelling, you’ll never know when the fuel gets empty, and you’ll never know where the fuel station is. There aren’t any traffic signals, any sign boards, no speed breakers yet you continue your Situations may change for good or for worse but what remains constant with us is – HOPE. When life shuts every door, hope shows the keys are with us. It’s not the destination that always counts, but the journey; Hope makes the journey worth travelling.
Well enough has been said about Hope, what is this Hope that I’m talking about? I was as curious as you are (I hope you are curious :p) to find out the answer. Here’s what I found.
‘What does hope mean to you?’ When this question was posed to a random sample of people across age groups, I got some coyly cute to astonishingly simple responses.
‘I hope toys fall from the sky to the ground’ – 8 year old
‘I get hope from my heart’ – 8 year old
‘Hope is the only thing that makes us go for it’ – 13 year old
‘If I’m on a malfunctioning aeroplane with 700 people and one parachute, the lucky one selects the parachute. However, I would refuse to use the parachute because I know there are other people who have survived thrashes like these before’ – 13 year old
‘My courage is my hope’ – 25 year old
‘Hope is God. Without god I’m zero, with god I’m hero’ – 32 year old
‘Something, somebody cannot afford to lose’ – 33 year old
‘A child’s smile is hope’ – 43 year old
‘Hope makes impossible, possible’ – 58 year old.
The meaning of hope may vary with people and with age but what remains constant is - perpetual hope, through which all of us derive inner strength to sail through our lives and to get closer to our goals.
Well, it’s time for you to answer the question now,
‘What does hope mean to you?’
