Stella Maris College (Autonomous), Chennai, is a Catholic Minority Institution run by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM).

The College aims at empowering young women from all backgrounds through holistic education thereby promoting social change and responsible citizenship. The institution also aims at fostering an inclusive community by bringing together different cultures and making the learning vibrant and nourishing.

The Department of Commerce (Honours) - Shift II, in collaboration with the Anti-Drug Abuse Club, organised 'Run 2026', an anti-drug awareness marathon on 7th February 2026.

Recognising the harm drugs cause in society, especially among students, the Anti-Drug Abuse Club believes this marathon will help raise public awareness.

The marathon was flagged off by Mr Iyappan, Medical Director of Kauvery Hospitals. More than 1000 students participated in the marathon.

The valedictory was graced by Dr Ashwin Vijay, Orthopaedician. Medals and prizes were distributed by Dr Ashwin Vijay to the first 10 finishers of the marathon. Many SMC Alumnae also participated in the marathon.

On January 24, 2026, Stella Maris College’s SMC Career Connect hosted a Commerce Faculty Training Programme. The programme was led by the Leaders of Deloitte USI’s Audit and Assurance Team. The training focused on student awareness regarding placements, job descriptions, and interview preparation. Both faculty and the Deloitte members engaged in an interactive session, exchanging ideas and thoughts on student welfare and progressions towards placements and job attritions. The session was well-received by both faculty and the team, as they had a meaningful conversation about understanding students’ well-being and interests.

Sensitisation Programme on Inter-Generational Bonding

The Department of Social Work, Stella Maris College, in collaboration with HelpAge India, organised a sensitisation programme titled “Bridging Generations: A Path to Mutual Understanding” on 21 January 2026 for BSW students, with the objective of fostering awareness, empathy, and respect towards older adults.

The programme featured a TED-style talk on “Ageing in India – Challenges and Opportunities” by Dr V. Kanagasabai, MD, followed by an engaging session on “Responsibility of Young People to Care for the Elderly in the Digital Era” by Dr K. Jafar Ali, PhD. Both sessions encouraged students to critically reflect on the realities of ageing, evolving inter-generational relationships, and the role of youth in building an inclusive society.

A key highlight of the programme was the pledge taken by the students, wherein they collectively committed themselves to upholding dignity, showing respect, extending care, and fostering meaningful connections with older persons, both within their families and in the wider community. The pledge served as a powerful moment of reflection, reinforcing the values of empathy, responsibility, and social inclusion.

Another meaningful activity during the workshop was the HUG (Help Unite Generations) band-tying ceremony*, where students tied HUG bands to the elderly participants. This symbolic gesture represented love, solidarity, and the bridging of generational gaps, creating an emotionally resonant moment that strengthened bonds between the young and the elderly.

Marked by active student participation, heartfelt interactions with elderly participants, and thoughtful feedback, the programme concluded on a reflective note, leaving students with a deeper understanding of compassion, respect, and inter-generational harmony.

The NSS Units of Stella Maris College are organising a seven-day Special Camp, from 24.01.2026 to 30.01.2026, with the theme 'Youth for My Bharat and Youth for Digital Literacy.' The camp aims to empower young volunteers to actively contribute to nation-building by promoting social responsibility, civic awareness, and inclusive growth. Through a series of community-oriented activities, awareness programs, and hands-on initiatives, visits to the police museum, rally and road safety, training programmes on life-saving and disaster management, volunteers will work towards strengthening the vision of 'my Bharat' while bridging the digital divide.

Special emphasis will be placed on digital literacy. The camp seeks to instil leadership service and a sense of commitment among youth as catalysts for a digitally empowered and socially responsible India.

On January 24, 2026, the camp was officially opened by Dr. Sr. Stella Mary FMM, Principal of Stella Maris College, and Rev. Dr. A. Irudaya Raj S.J., Professor in the Department of Visual Communication at Loyola College, Chennai. Dr. Sr. Stella Mary praised the students for their dedication to serving others and noted that this reflects the true spirit of Stella Maris. Rev. Dr. Irudaya Raj encouraged the students for the upcoming seven-day activities, highlighting the importance of women in social work and advocating for those without a voice.

The Department of Tamil Language, Stella Maris College (Autonomous), hosted a vibrant and joyous Pongal celebration on 12 January 2026. The campus came alive with beautiful kolams, and students embraced the spirit of the festival, dressed in traditional attire.

The event was graced by the presence of the Chief Guest, Mr Arivumathi, a renowned poet and lyricist. Through his address, he shared insights into the cultural significance of Pongal, shedding light on the meanings behind its rituals and traditions. His recitation of poems and haikus was met with much appreciation and delight from the audience.

The celebrations continued with lively cultural performances by the students, including a special showcase of traditional art forms such as oyilattam, parai, silambattam, and more.

The festivities concluded on a sweet note, with students being served sweet pongal, bringing the celebration to a warm and memorable close.

Stella Maris College (Autonomous), Chennai, hosted the Distribution Ceremony of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Free Laptop Scheme for the 2025–2026 academic year on 10 January 2026 at the campus. The programme was organised for final-year undergraduate students across the disciplines of Arts and Sciences in the college. Around 1,200 students received laptops under the scheme.

The laptop distribution was inaugurated by Thiru Ezhilan Naganathan, Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, as part of the Government of Tamil Nadu’s ongoing initiative to support students in higher education through access to digital learning resources. The scheme aims to enhance academic engagement, bridge the digital divide, and equip students with essential tools for learning, research, and career preparedness.

The ceremony marked a significant milestone for graduating students, reaffirming the State Government’s commitment to inclusive education and the empowerment of youth through technology. The event reflects the institution’s commitment to facilitating government-led educational initiatives that directly benefit its student community.

As part of the 150-year celebration of the Congregation of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM), Stella Maris College organized a grand programme “Christmas Celebration of Light and Leadership” on 17 December 2025. The event was graced by Ms. Chandrika Krishnamurthy Tandon, an accomplished businesswoman, philanthropist, vocalist, composer, and Grammy Award winner, whose presence inspired the gathering with her message of compassion, leadership, and global service.

Highlighting the institution’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, students from the SMC Innovation Centre showcased their visionary ideas and working prototypes. The SMC Innovation Centre powered by digital, social, edtech, and sustainability innovations. It provides a dynamic ecosystem that mentors, nurtures, and transforms student ideas into impactful startups.

The showcase reflected remarkable student enthusiasm and creativity, featuring teams such as Pinatec, Polaries, Ecobuddies, Skill Travo, Skill Swap, Polaris, Stella Buddy, Scentify, Aquamist, and Oxypod. Their projects demonstrated forward-thinking solutions aimed at social progress, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.

The event celebrated not only the legacy of the FMM congregation but also the next generation of innovators driven by purpose, passion, and leadership.

The Congregation of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM), founded by Blessed Mary of the Passion, commemorates 150 years since its founding. For decades, the Sisters of the FMM have served with compassion and commitment in the fields of education, healthcare, socio-pastoral work, anti-trafficking initiatives and empowering individuals and the wider community.

As part of the 150-year celebrations, on 17th December 2025, Stella Maris College organised “A Christmas Celebration of Light & Leadership”. Ms. Chandrika Tandon, a distinguished alumna of Holy Angels Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School, under the administration of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, was the Chief Guest. Ms. Tandon is an accomplished Businesswoman, Philanthropist, Vocalist and Composer. She won a Grammy Award for her album in 2024. She was presented with a citation honouring her for her distinguished contributions.

The programme started with a prayer song led by the students of the Western Music Club, followed by the lighting of the lamp. Dr Swapna Satish, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, presented SMC Pragati - a transformative initiative for students, especially those from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds, providing opportunities and experiences that foster personality development and enhance career readiness. This was followed by a Christmas Musical by the ‘Voices of Immanuel’, comprising students from Holy Angels Higher Secondary School and students from the Western Music, Western Dance and the Classical Dance Clubs of Stella Maris College.

Ms. Chandrika Tandon addressed the gathering, highlighting her personal mantra and journey. She also participated in a panel discussion with students, where she answered their questions with a meaningful and motivational spirit. The event ended with Ms. Tandon visiting the SMC Innovation Centre, where the students presented their projects.
