Performers - The Handel Manuel Chorus

THE HANDEL MANUEL CHORUS

A few years after the passing away of Padma Shri Handel Manuel -- one of the giants of the Western Classical Music scene in India, pianist and organist, the first Indian Conductor of the Madras Musical Association and the founder-director of the Madras Philharmonic and Choral Society--his youngest brother and flautist Surender Schaffter and his wife Sharada founded the Handel Manuel Chorus. Under the leadership of Mrs. Schaffter, the 35-voice, multifaith choir performs church music drawn from a repertoire consisting of masterpieces from the Pre-Baroque, Baroque and Classical periods. It has performed in Nagercoil, Bangalore, the Christian Medical College at Vellore and in Chennai, including the Basilica of St Thomas at Mylapore.

SHARADA SCHAFFTER, Conductor

Sharada Schaffter, who began her musical career in her teens as organist in churches at Madurai and Kodaikanal, later became organist and choirmaster at Christ Church and Holy Trinity Church in Chennai. She conducted the Madras Vepery Male Voice Choir and the Madras Philharmonic and Choral Society, before taking up the leadership of the Handel Manuel Chorus. She is an author and a Mathematics-teacher-turned social activist involving women and media. Currently, she is the Honorary Director of Seva Trust, a service organisation.
