Microsoft CEO Nadella Pushes for Less Friction With Government Work

Amid government's claim of improved business climate in the country, Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella on Thursday said he would love to have "less friction" when working with the government systems.

"I would love to have less friction in doing business, as I am a person who always pushes for more. At the same time, I don't think if things had not changed, we'd have been able to achieve what we've achieved in the past 12 months with our cloud offering in this country. But I like to push for more," Nadella told a select group of editors.

The Hyderabad-born Nadella, the first Microsoft chief from outside the US, was in Mumbai to launch his company's largest-ever customer conference here as a part of the Richmond-based tech giant's 25 years of operations in the country.

Explaining further, Nadella said he is surprised by the number of government bodies that have adopted Microsoft's cloud services launched one year ago with three cloud data centers in Mumbai, Pune and Chennai.

"I am extremely positive about the cloud business. It's not just private sector but a large number of government bodies are already on our cloud platform," said Nadella.

Microsoft is in India for the long-term, he said.

"What is happening here is not only in the government, but also in the private sector, the broader economy as a whole, and that's where my optimism comes from.

"Also, looking at the progress we've made in the last 12 months in the cloud business, I think this was possible because of all the structural reforms happening," he said.

However, the tech guru was quick to add that he would be happy to see faster growth, saying "we as a company always want to go faster and well, we want more of course, while at the same time I am optimistic at the rate of change that's happening, and the rate of adoption.

"Because it's one thing to open something up, but it's much more gratifying to see that what you have done is actually at the hands of entrepreneurs, public sector organizations and large businesses been converted into value both locally and globally," Nadella said.

After being in one of the lowest among the nations in ease of doing business ranking, the World Bank last week ranked India at 130, up 14 notches.

MIT Study suggests current solar power tech is good enough

The standard line about solar power is that while good in theory, the technology just isn't there to keep our lights on and our Netflix streaming. But a new study from MIT (PDF) suggests that's not the case. According to the massive report (an epic 356 pages) current crystalline silicon photovoltaic technology is capable of delivering terawatt-scale power by 2050. That would be many times larger than Topaz facility California that generates 550 megawatts. While there is certainly room for improvement in efficiency, the MIT study says that the biggest hurdle isn't tech, it's investment. The authors called out the lack of funding for research and development, but focused more on poor governmental policies. Subsidies generally go to other energy sources, like oil and natural gas, and trade policies set by the federal government have driven up prices by restricting imports of cheaper solar parts in order to boost domestic production.

UC Browser Gets New Video Management Feature

UCWeb, makers of the popular UC Browser app for Android, has announced the My Videos manager feature for UC Browser that it claims will enhance the user's video viewing experience.

The My Videos manager feature lets UC Browser users filter their videos into four sections, namely Watching History, Grabbed (downloaded), Grabbing (downloading), and Local Videos. While the Watching History section, as the name suggests, will show the list of videos viewers have seen previously, the Downloading and Downloaded section lets them manage videos to watch them later.

The Local Video section in the My Videos manager let users play any of their saved videos inside UC Browser. A Download Path option is also provided to show users alternate folder options to help manage their smartphone's storage. UC Browser explains that the My Video Manager can be downloaded from the browser's Menu.

In October, UC Browser version 10.0 was launched for Android devices. The version of UC Browser came with a brand new UI inspired by Google's Material Design philosophy seen in Android 5.0 Lollipop. It also features simplified settings and a redesigned navigation page.

UC Browser for Android 10.0 also included a brand new tab management system that makes it easier to switch between various open tabs.

Version 9.9.2 of UC Browser for Android added a built-in ad blocker feature, which automatically blocks all the advertisements on a webpage. The version also added a navigation page with new icons for browsing content. Last week, UCWeb launched an Android game in India, called UC Crazy Run.
